Ive now checked in online and have noticed on the QF website in the manage my bookings section the following detail for tonights flight

Status: Waitlisted
Upgrade Status: Requested
Travel Class: (U)
Flight Duration: 9hr 35m

There is actually 2 lots of flight details, 1 for my Y seat and 1 for the J request
Is this good ?

ps - Are they always 5hrs to the minute when they confirm upgrades ? or can the time before vary ?

I would say you have missed out, they normally appear at the T-24 hour mark if they are going to go through, although miracles happen.
