Hi
I am travelling to SIN with Qantas. On the outbound flight, it will be direct leaving from the international terminal in SYD. However on the return leg, it is a non-direct flight (SIN-MEL; then MEL-SYD) and I will be arriving in the domestic terminal. We usually drive and park at the airport terminal as there are 5 of us (3 young children).
Given we are departing and arriving at different terminals, where and what is the best way to park at the airport? Can we use the Qantas shuttle bus to travel between the 2 terminals? Our trip is 10 days long.

Thanks in advance.

Bit of a read but a fair bit of info on Sydney terminal transfers here: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....dney-domestic-sydney-international-77119.html

Technically you will not be allowed to use the Qantas bus.

This is from the Qantas webiste:
The Transfer Lounge is located airside (after passing through the security check point), at Gate 15 in T3. A shuttle bus service is available to passengers that are travelling or have travelled on a Qantas flight (including codeshare flights) or oneworld flight. The shuttle buses operate every 10-20 minutes from 6am to 9.40pm AEST. On arrival at T1 proceed up the escalator, through immigration and security to your departure gate.

I thought that since I have just travelled on a QF flight then I should be eligible to use the bus?

You will probably be allowed to use the bus; your main problem would be that you won't be allowed to carry your checked bags with you (the bus departs from airside and you won't be able to get them through security).

OK thanks for clarifying. We are still tossing up whether we will have checked baggage.

Not stated there, but has been stated previously on the website is a requirement to be connecting to a Qantas, and possibly a jetstar flight. Details aren't really important. this requirement is strictly enforced at the international terminal, but not so much at the domestic terminal.

However, that's not really important. The qantas transfer bus is airside, and you don't have a connecting international departure. This means that you will have to leave the secure area, pick up your checked luggage and then get back through security into the domestic terminal to use the transfer bus. I believe it will be very difficult to get security to let you in with check luggage. Not being able to get to gate 15 with your checked luggage would be a technical impediment to using the Qantas transfer bus.

10 days, 3 young children and no checked luggage? good luck.

We are well travelled and have done many trips <14 days with no checked luggage :)
I was thinking only one of us need to trek back to pick up car (whether it's taxi, bus or train whilst the other wait with kids at domestic terminal for pick up).

My family travel usually has make-up taking at least one person's carry on allowance.
You're lucky.

If you do live in SYD, what I would suggest is to get a maxi taxi.
Or even a hire car, and you drive.
You can drop off the car at international on your departure, and that is where your responsibility with it ends, and then pick one up at domestic to drive the family home from the domestic terminal with another hire car, then return it.
Yes, both options will incur an expense, (it will be expensive), but it does save the parking fees, and worrying if your car will be safe or not.
Consider how much is it to park for 10 days, and compare that with the taxi.
OR if the family have Opal cards, its just a bit under $5 per person to get the train, interterminal.
Edit: (just checked) parking on site at SYDi at P7 international is $206 for over 10 days, Mascot Valet is cheaper at about $174 or so.

I'd park international as you say and depart as normal. On return to Australia, when you arrive in Sydney domestic swing by Gate 15 and see if they'll allow one of you to use the bus. If yes, great, if not, take the train. Rest of family either collects baggage and waits, or just waits in terminal for a bit and meets you at pickup point later.

Better to do the unknown/cross terminal bit on arrival (assuming no pressing deadline), rather than departure.

As suggested by others I would drop the family off at the international and then take the car to a domestic carpark (look online for deals) and then catch the train to the international and hook back up with the family. At the end of your trip you don't want to be stuffing around with baggage, bags and grumpy children (if they are like mine). Transfer between the domestic and international airport only costs $6.00. Parking for 10 days will cost you from $120-$300 depending on where you park.
Good luck and have a good trip.

Bolt :)

Bit more familiar with MEL, but at SYD are there any offsite private parking providers that drop off and collect from both terminals? If so, that could be an option.

I know you are keen on car but I would use train .

The train will cost about $60 for 2 adults, not sure of children cost but maybe at least $40 or $50. If parking can be had for $120 the convenience alone is worth it.

With the stories I have been reading re car parks I would not leave mine there.

Thanks everyone. We'll look at costs between parking at international vs domestic terminal and decide between the 2. I generally find there is less of a walk from the international terminal to the car (no matter where you park) compared to the domestic terminal.
