Due to the cancellation of my OOL flight tonight and being shunted to a much later BNE flight, I was kicking up my heels in the cough end QP for a few hours when all of a sudden there was commotion from behind the partition in the J lounge. Commotion was followed by ever so polite announcements over the PA to evacuate the J lounge and a bit of smoke wafting towards the ceiling where the two lounges abut. It was business as usual in the QP for a minute or two more. Shortly later staff started dashing about, grabbing fire extinguishers in the QP ordering evacuation of that lounge too.

Apparently the fire was in the J lounge kitchen. Anyone flying in the next few days probably won’t be getting fed in the J lounge!

So here I sit at gate 6 where they just announced the lounges won’t be reopening tonight at all.

Interestingly no evacuation alarms were triggered and staff seemed to be giving mixed messages as to whether QP had to be evacuated or not. A bit of a revision of staff processes and alarm testing might be in order...

Fun times. And two more hours until boarding with my half finished drink still upstairs...

I was in the J lounge when this happened. Looked like an electrical fire in the ceiling of the kitchen.

Only evacuation was via some announcements. Really lacked details and urgency. Very surprised that there was no actual alarm!

Oh dear. So there is a good chance it is going to be closed for a bit of time? I have a few transits in SYD over the next few weeks.

Sounds like a great opportunity to start renovating that lounge.

Arrived 7.30 am to SYD J dom, advised closed due to yesterday’s fire...and redirected to The Pub. Haven’t been in Pub for ages. Brekky ok. It’s busy with the J lounge overflow.

Business lounge still closed today.

Apparently some sort of electrical fire near the buffet. One of the long term staff mentioned reopening Wednesday.
