Recently flew with Thai Air to Bkk from Sydney in the oldest 747 in history ie. it wasn't a nice experience. I see that TG also fly a 777 out daily around 9am from SYD-BKK - anyone flown this flight? Is this plane an improvement on the old 747s they fly out in the PM?

I assume from your comments you flew C class, which is definitely not worth the money.

Y class on these 747's really isn't too bad, though...

Yes C class...not good!

The hit/miss service aside, the C seats on the 772ER planes are actually quite nice. I prefer it to lots of the other sloped beds actually.

But as always with TG, like the service - it's like Russian roulette as to what seat config you'd actually get.

Och!

TG only have three unconverted 747 left and they operate the MUC run nowadays. I did a check over the past week out of SYD and they were all what we call "new improved whiz bang whiter than white 747's".

That is as good as it gets on the TG 747's

If you complain to TG, they will swing you a bag of points, a 2008 calendar, a set of cuff links or a silk tie, depending on how well you write a complaint letter.

I don't fly down the back so I regret to be "none the wiser", and it's the reason I commute to SYD to fly F on the 747. Out of MEL they have the 777, there is only C. Unfortunately when you are well looked after with '99 Dom, I often forgo dinner, they just make the bed up, and that's all I remember till just before landing. I pay my own fares, and for AUD$3675 for F (if our dollar hits 95cents, it's time to buy the 2008 supply) it's the best deal I can find and still accumulate *Alliance points at 150+%. In my book they do the right thing by ME;) , I admit it's a shame about everybody else:D . Seriously though, you may like the 777, I don't, they're a new aircraft and the problem we have out of MEL is there are only 30 seats and the 6 facing the bulkhead are useless and it leaves only 10 down the centre that will assure you that nobody's going to interupt your sleep. I do the trip once a month so i have it down to a fine art, but I stay with them mainly because their BKK lounge is quiet wheras the QF/BA is absolute bedlam. If anyone asked me 2 years ago would I stay with an airline because of a lounge, I would have told them to get a hold on themselves. Hope you enjoy your next trip

Besides the lack of F, the MEL 772ERs often get swapped with the 773s. I read that they've started converting the C on the 773s over to the new seating though.

And no I didn't get any freebies the few times I complained. Merely some platitudes and a reference to the bit of the COC which say that they can swap equipment if they bl**dy hell want to. Then again I'm not a member of ROP as I accumulate to Miles and More, so that might be the difference?

Yes, I think you have hit the nail on the head, because I never have any problem with them, and they are over protective of their clientele, they do cotton wool their FFs, God bless them, in BKK I seem to have one forever "tagging" me from check in to the gate. I don't feel comfortable with that part of the service, but I do appreciate not having the problems I read about.

As an afterthought what are some of the cheapest J class fares to BKK?? Does not have to be TG either...
