I get another chance to see them soon. Some are less than 100km south of Christchurch! Biggest one is still south of Dunedin so they will be around for a while yet.

Ahh, that confirms my belief that Stuart Island is not really an island but an iceberg that floated a little further north than usual.

That be the one. All I know is that when I visited Bluff a few years back, one trip in the middle of November the island was covered in snow. When I was back two weeks later, it was still cold but the snow was all gone. I asked a local if they had experienced a heat wave while I was away, to which he shook his head and said "Nahh, we hid a geele and the snow wes all blown off the northern seed of the island".

Ah for the old days. I recall the Lockheed Electra (circa 1960 - I'm not old enough to have flown the ealier one!) with a lounge seat arrangement at the rear.

I even seem to recall early 747 flights in the US carrying a piano bar. Didn't last long, though.
