Bugger! I missed this one. I was in London on this weekend and didn't notice this meet pop up. Would have loved to come along and the pub looks interesting. I may go next time I'm in London anyway to check it out for Sunday lunch.

I may be in London again in October so will look out for any meets then.

Not sure if it changes week to week but it's a tenner for a roast and a choice of either beef or pork.

OT - Sorry....but given this thread has all the London brain trust - here I go.

Looking to book a few nights in London. The Mrs likes Charlotte Street Hotel (Firmdale hotel).....I like the look of Four Seasons Canary Wharf.

Q - is Canary Wharf location a poor choice for a three night tourist?

IMHO, yes!!

With the driverless DLR (district light rail) and the Jubilee line we really enjoy Canary Wharf.
Don't know about the Four Seasons because we used to stay at Hilton Canary Wharf which is very close to everything. You could comp Flashback into their executive lounge that has a nice view.

The absolute river frontage views from the FS are very enticing.....but geez, it looks a long way from the city.

Been to London many times - but never past Tower Hill.

We saw the ship named Europa leave from Greenwich this morning so that is a lovely part of the Thames view when you go to East London.

Hilton Tower Bridge is a good location. Close to everything you might want to see in 3 days and close to Strada right on the Thames which is a cheerful restaurant with a nice view.

Minor correction cove:

DLR = Docklands Light Rail :)

On the question of Canary Wharf for a 3 day tourist, it would depend on what you want to see.

Handy for for the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Monument, St Paul's and St Katherine's Dock.

If intending to do Central London (Parliament, Embankment, Bucky Palace, Westminster Abbey & Cathedral, West End etc it is a bit of a haul and some tube changes.

Depends if just doing tourist photo stops or shopping as lugging multiple bags and an empty credit card back to dump in hotel can be a pain.

Probably best to work out where you want to go and the go online to TfL route planner and look at times.

Take into account time spent travelling vs cost of hotel for desired location.

Also try to avoid rush hour if returning with shopping - try dropping off shopping by 3 pm at hotel as being "sardined canned" in rush hour with shopping bags and 100's of commuters is unpleasant. A deadline for shopping may also save credit card meltdown!!

Rush hour should be spent in a pleasant location like the pub used for the meet :)

Final advice on hotels is read trip advisor reviews before booking as many website booking sites tell you how wonderful the hotel is but not the negatives.

Enjoy your trip :)

Thanks for the correction ChrisDPom on Docklands Light Rail = DLR. Most times it is clean, quick, modern and driverless . The Jubilee line is pretty much the same but a bit more crowded during peak travel times and has a driver.
Strada has a lovely view from the upstairs section where you can see the Thames and bridges.

Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated.

Decided on Charlotte Street Hotel. Good location......have stayed at two of their other London Hotels (Firmdale - Soho and Covent Garden) and really like their style.

Will post closer to the day to see if anyone would like to have a drink - cheers.

Well you found the place. Wrong date, wrong time, but one out of three ain't bad.

Cruiser you missed us looking for Vegemite down at a Pound Shop out at Stratford (but no luck).
Where are you staying?
I still owe you a steak dinner from a few months ago.

Hmm. No £1 vegemite? That's annoying as it is often at poundland.

Ok just one thing about Ireland ....don't drive around 3am when they let the drinkers out of the pubs.
