What happens if your flying at 36,000ft?

This week several US media outlets reported that NASA was warning the massive flare that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

...there hasn't been one since the mid-80s. Commodore had just launched the Amiga and the only digital storm making the news was Tetris.

I suppose this is all a result of climate change ...

I did once have a major network equipment vendor claim that the root cause for a data centre core switch/router failure was "cosmic radiation"! But that was only about 3 years ago and not the mid-80s. I rejected their root cause analysis and told them to replace the device supervisor module, which they did and it has never missed a beat since.

That might happen too, but if you survived, you’d probably have cancer :p

Sometime in the next 50 years.......

When I was at a conference in Japan in May I found that the Japanese actually have a website that will give you the radiation dose for a nominated route based on the solar activity and all that. I think they claim to have most world airports included using IATA codes etc. so you could just select SYD-SIN on a date it would give you a radiation dose. But I tried it out and it was very hard to use the english version, as in I could only find the route selection option on the japanese version of the website.
