I didn't need to pay for Visa on arrival at DXB either when i was there in Feb.

Note that until Sep 1:
  • 33,400 AX MR => 20,040 SPG
  • 20,040 SPG => 25,040 AA miles
  • 25,040 AA miles => 50,000 HHonors point + 40 AA miles
This is far better than the standard 33,400 AX MR => 33,400 HHonors

I ended up going down this route, thanks again serfty. Points are currently awaiting the SPG->AA transfer.

Out of curiosity, how long does this usually take? The site says 4-6wks, but I'm assuming it should be quicker than that. Would like to get the accommodation booked ASAP.

Cheers :)

I've had Starpoints converted to AA miles in less than a week, and another time about 1.5 weeks. OTOH converting Starpoints to LH miles took exactly 6 weeks.

There is a lot of talk on FT about this.Consensus is that SPG-AA occurs on Sunday US time.I did a transfer 2 weeks ago on a Friday and they turned up in my AA account on Monday morning ie Sunday US time.
Not done an AA-Hhonors transfer.

The entire three step process was completed in about 10 working days, so about two weeks. I did check every morning and evening and did the next step as soon as the points/miles appeared.

Note that non AA elites must have at least 25000 AAdvantage points before they can transfer, the actual transfers can be less.

Thanks. Points are currently in between AA and HHonors, so getting close.

Note also, there's a $25USD transfer fee for non AA elites. Still a bargain, but not if you're transferring a small amount of points, or are planning on doing regular AMEX->SPG->AA->HH transfers.

PS: Itinerary has changed somewhat...work was extended and instead of extending the holiday component I decided to compress it. Now spending 3 nights in London, 2 nights in NYC, and only 24hrs in Frankfurt (Nürburgring). Not too fussed about reducing NYC and Frankfurt, as I've been there before. Hoping 3 nights is enough for a first-timer to London. Everything else will be the same length (Dubai, Helsinki, and I've extended Las Vegas and Anchorage).
