i've stayed and would recommend oakwood apartments shinjuku (reviews on tripadvisor)
for about 13000 yen you get a (small) but really well laid out 1 bdm with kitchen, washer/dryer, opening windows, "balcony"- you can just squeeze outside if ur a smoker, and fantastic japanese style bathroom- a cruiseship like sealed bathroom with self filling hot tub and the whole lot doubles as a clothes dryer!! it's about 5-10 min walk from the station and i love staying there..

Recently stayed at the Granbell, Shibuya
- 2 min walk from Shibua station

SHIBUYA GRANBELL HOTEL

re: oakwood apartments shinjuku- short stays were ok when i booked with them last year (booked 3 and 7 nights) - i called there local booking service to arrange. In the US you need a minimum 30 day stay accordingto their website

anyhow have fun planning :p

Tokyo is a great example of status paying off.As SPG plat i can get the Sheraton Miyako for Y13800 per night with breakfast, internet and drinks for 2 hours each evening.Sure not the greatest area but a regular free shuttle to Meguro station making getting around Tokyo easy for everyone but QF009 who keeps irregular hours and has too much shopping to carry on the trains :p.Everyone here gets free internet and printing but only in the business centre. As plat i get in room access free.
The dearest SPG hotel is the Westin Tokyo for Y24500.As plat I get one of the best breakfast spreads in the world, lounge access and free wifi there.Only a short walk to Ebisu station.

Can recommend Park Hotel at Shiodome/Shimbashi.

www.parkhoteltokyo.com

Excellent location and many good inexpensive restaurants around the area to service the businessman.

Also least than 5minutes walk to Shimbashi railway stations which is a major station servicing many different train lines including the bullet train.

The hotel is on the airport bus run or 5 minute taxi to Tokyo to connect with the Narita Express Train.

Secret is to become a member of Designs Hotel and you get 10% discount. Because Park is not a full member you do not get all the additional benefits, but a least you save 10%

Good luck

Actually stayed here in 2005, rooms were smallish, but hotel and furnishings great and the views (from the lobby AND from our room) were fantastic - we looked out a the Tokyo tower and beyond that most of Tokyo spread out in front of us. Really enjoyed the stay, since then have stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Ginza (close to office, so that's where they put me) and Hilton (for status) and thought the Park Hotel was much better.

Thanks for the info... just signed up for SPG to check out what they offer. Would prefer something closer to transport though.

Thanks to everyone for the input... Would give you kudos but there is no button for it!

Will check out all of them before we book next week.

The Dai-ichi (1-2-6 Shimbashi) is nice.

I'd warn you off the in house dining menu though. 5,000 Yen for a bowl of cereal meant I was ducking down to the nearby McDonalds for Hotcakes each day!

Easy walking access to Ginza, the Palace and if you're moderately fit The Tokyo Tower.

We paid with some Yen I'd purchased earlier that year (at about 91 to the AU$) which was great because we were getting 65Yen to the AU$ at the time.

Stayed at the Keio Plaza and went with the premium room. Was 5* in every aspect and worth every cent... would definitely recommend.

As this thread has reappeared, I think I might take it for a ride. I'm also looking for a hotel in Tokyo, for late May. I'm going there for a conference and I'm having great trouble finding any hotels near the conference venue, which is the Tower Hall Funabori

It is right next to Funabori train station on the Toei Shinjuku line, and kind of north of Kasei or Tokyo Disney. Basically a number of hotel/travel sites (expedia, wotif, qantas, Japanican etc.) all seem to have nothing in that area. The conference organisers seem to be suggesting saying at Shinjuku. But I'm a bit reluctant due to my mobility problems, which means I might not be able to walk or could just fall over, which might be rather bad in a peak hour crowd at Shinjuku station.

Does anyone know (or can even recommend) of any hotels near Funabori in Toyko?

I can't add anything about the Funabori area but did spend a bit of time around Shinjuku. Being the busiest train station in the world (according to Wikipedia), it involves a lot of walking. It is very well signed though and quite easy to find your way around. Shinjuku would be great if you are mobile... I am just recovering from a broken ankle which made it difficult to get around such a large area.

I am planning to stay at Hotel Villa Fontaine Shiodome, apparently it has good reviews and recommended in FT! It is next to Shiodome station, as well as short walk to Shinbashi station, Ginza district and Tsuki fish market. Also one subway away from Roppongi and Shinjuku.

I found this hotel 1 minute walk from Tower Hall.
No idea what it's like, I just Googled it.

I've stayed at Citadines Shinjuku and can recommend that although it might not suit with mobility problems.
