Looking at family holiday to Hamilton island early Jan 2023.
Price is $242 (30000 points), or Economy classic reward (18,000 points + $50).
Going by my calculations, the Economy classic reward seat would cost $194..... good saving.
Would it be better to wait to see if actual fare gets reduced lower than $194 (cash price),
or just get the economy classic reward seat?
Im hoping my maths is correct on this!

I would predict it is more likely the classic reward seats will be snapped up and will disappear, rather than the cash price coming down.

Yea, if you think the rewards are better value as of now, get the seats. If by some miracle the cash fare drops to a value you consider better, get the cash fare, and cancel for free the reward seats.

Keep in mind also that while sale fares probably will show up, January is a peak period and unlikely to be available for sale fares, so perhaps best to go with the reward seats as is

This is in the zone of being a worthwhile economy redemption as you are getting >1c value for the points with the Classic reward and have the flexibility benefit.

It depends if you are likely to want those points to get higher value in the future

Note that (currently) classic reward bookings can be cancelled for free and you get a full refund (eventually).

This ceases for domestic bookings on April 30th after which (if Qantas do not extend their Fly Flexible policy) a 6k points per PAX cancellation fee may apply.

30th April is also the current end date for free changes for revenue as well.
