It's happened again; both times this year I have been departing Oz for HKG and my flight is significantly delayed. Each times it's QF29 (In March ex SYD)

Here's the inbound picture for the originally scheduled operating aircraft:
Code:
QF30 Darwin 19:55 07:25 (Sat) Estimated

QF30 Hong Kong 19:55 16:39 Routed via Darwin
The aircraft had a mechanical problem and diverted to DRW. They have been unable to fix it quickly and those PAX are stuck there. Given the acurrent estimated arrival time I don't think Qantas are planning to put the PAX up in any hotel of the "Top End".

Anyway, Qantas have dug up another aircraft from somewhere and I'm now scheduled thus:
Code:
QF29 Hong Kong 23:00 00:45 (Sat) Estimated
.

I was upgraded this morning to Business class using 40K points.

Guess what? the substitued aircraft is has J down to row 30 so it's a 'pacific config'; The flight it was chockers in Y (mainly Y0 for the last fortnight) and they have now had to upgrade all those pax thus displaced. J is now chockers where before thare were about 10 empty seats.

As a QF WP, I would almost certainly been one of the people operationally upgraded!

I was not to know beforehand, but there's 40K down the tube! :(

Hindsight is a wonderful gift. ;) Enjoy your time in the lounge.

I am sure you will get more than 40,000 points back after the new DONE4 you're starting.

Look om it this way, you might have been given an involuntary upgrade, but then again, you might not and have been left languishing in a crowded cabin the other side of the curtain. At least you were guaranteed a decent seat for 40k

Calmed down a bit now ... I really shouldn't be too upset I was just having a rant. :p At least I have a lower deck aisle seat; not 23D but almost as good.

Good luck to those who are op upped. I was talking to a woman who earlier was the only other PAX in here; she was upped from J to F. (WP) She has more of an issue with the delay.
I was approached by a Lounge agent and asked if I was travelling WHY as they are desparate for spaces. An MAS flight to KL has taken some of the load but it's still not enough. They are really hoping for some no-shows.

I've found out the registration and according to the fleet info thread on FT I'm in an AVOD equipped Ugly sister. The pacific config has 50 less WHY seats and 14 more J seats for a net change of -36. EF was showing 11 empty J seats after I was upgraded so there was a bit of slack. I'm guessing they are around a dozen over.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
