Strategy to obtain US Amex

US Banks want to see you’re using the credit they’ve given you before they consider you need more.

I spend mostly on my personal card. I have recurring spend of $A1k per month on my Ink.

Chase are also sensitive to other matters like personal credit across all US banks as a % of income you’ve declared in your application. Chase look at their total exposure across Personal and Business Lines.

BTW why did you choose the ink Business Unlimited as it has foreign transaction fees?.

Thanks Albyd. Perhaps I need to put a bit more spend on the Ink then. I can't recall why, probably because the SUB was higher at the initial time.

Hi everyone,

Looking to do my first global transfer from AMEX and since I have not yet obtained my ITIN (as my CAA isn't available for a few weeks) I was wondering if the first card obtained is important since it won't be attached to an ITIN and can't retroactively be attached.

My initial instinct was to go with the $0 Hilton Honors, however if I am able to have a first card with a bonus points offer (and cancel it later without affecting my credit since it won't be attached to an ITIN) I assume that would be a more savy decision...

Once my ITIN is obtained, I will then apply for the Hilton Honors and have it as a keeper card for credit purposes.

I also now have a 6 month history of repayments on the US HSBC premier mastercard, however I believe that only builds internal credit within HSBC as it is not attached to an ITIN...

I would appreciate any feedback or guidance on this situation or first card GT without an ITIN present and if my thinking if flawed in any way please let me know. Thank you!

Hey guys, good news! My US HSBC credit card is showing in my accounts! Not actually had a welcome/confirmation email yet but this is clearly a good sign for approval.

Quick question as my mailing address is set to the US at a friend's place. Can I message and ask for it to be sent to my residential address on file instead?

Also a big thank you to all of you and just this forum in general. Could not have done it without the amazing information here and the posters who give such helpful advice!

Yes, I managed to get my HSBC Elite CC sent directly to me - in fact I only changed my HSBC mailing address to my US one after a couple of months (after I'd received the debit and credit cards) so that I could get a statement with the US address on it for Amex :)

Nice. My limit is $5k. Am I ok spending and taking up most of that limit on a monthly basis or do you think I'll be affecting my credit score and standing with HSBC US?

As I understand I need to wait 6 months before asking for a credit limit increase?

Not having an itin Doesn’t mean this first Cant won’t later on be traced and linked to credit file using other identifiers .
First card should be a free card you can keep forever at no cost .

I would have thought spending up to near it would be fine if you clear it after each statement - from what I've read the US firms seem to quite like people making use of the credit. I'm not sure how they would view paying it off mid-month though to get more spend through (I know some UK finance firms don't view that as positively).

The balance is reported to credit bureaus only when the statement is issued . So if you pay it off before it’s issued a lower balance will be reported . Also it’s advisable to not to use more than 30 % ( at statement issue ).
They frown upon paying down balance and then respending within same statement period .

I've got them to send it to my residential address rather than mailing address. They done it, they just had to put a block on the card and say its lost and cancel it and order a new one which will be sent to my residential address.
