Hi guys,

sorry to post here on this, I have read many posts on this topic already but feel I have a somewhat unique position. I am racking my brain on the cheapest and easiest trade off at the moment.

I am going to be 95 status credits shy of achieving Platinum for the first time. My expiry date is Jan 31. I have a window of a week in January where I am not travelling elsewhere but will be working so planning on doing a same day return status run on a weekend. I signed up to the current "double status credits" promotion on domestic fares (Qantas.com/double), so figure I only need 50 "real" points, which will be doubled, to hit the target of 100... and don't need to go international in this case.

I am Sydney based.

I think Syd-Adl on a semi-flex ticket is the "easiest" route, but not exactly the cheapest.

What at would you do in my situation?

cheers!
dan

Check out the QFF calc. here might be of help.

Once to Plat, wait till you sample those 1st lounges as I did recently.

how many points do you have?
are you prepared to run the MASA gauntlet?
see the MASA threads if that means nothing....they are a good way to trade points for SCs especially so with DSC offer

What do you consider expensive?
Jan 11 you can do SYD-HBA am Red eDeal and HBA-xMEL-SYD late PM on Semi Flex $574 total.

Must be more options out there that are cheaper.
Quick look at TSV came in cheaper.

Look at SYD CBR J one way and a rededeal back.

thanks Limewood. I have been glued to that link recently. Do you know if there is a table for miles between destinations rather than having to search destinations individually?

cant wait :-)

Thanks mrfreeze, this is what I was looking for. I had checked TSV on the miles calculator and it said Syd-Tsv was now Jetstar's so I didn't think to look for multiple leg journeys via Bne... I think this is what I'll end up doing. Any tips on things to do in Townsville for a few hours? :-) I'm a diver so might try and make a weekend of it!

cheers

Dumb question... What is MASA? I see a lot of JASA / xASA / QASA references but don't understand "MASA"

Not a dumb question, I bet many who start reading AFF have the same Q initially.

My understanding (and those with many more AFF time under their belt may wish to improve this answer) is that MASA (Marginal Any Seat Award) is the catch-all term for ASA's booked at Classic rates - they are marginal for the airline, don't read too much into that term. The term covers all classes, Economy (YASA or which actually books into X class), Business (JASA which actually books into U class), Premium Economy (ZASA) and First (FASA which actually books into P class).

I find xASA the most confusing because it can either refer to an Economy (X) class ASA or an ex-ASA (ie. the award formerly known as an ASA now made marginal by a Qantas 'enhancement').

Hope this helps (and that I have it factually correct). There are lots of threads which deal with this issue, take some time and have a read, it will eventually make sense.

Regards,
OzEire

No idea as to what to do in Townsville, never been there myself.
Hopefully others can suggest something to do.

Me neither, but going in a couple weeks to have a look... and rack up some SC's ;)

Depending on how long you're there for consider a ferry trip across to Magnetic Island.

Twist in the story.

As I will be overseas at my reset date of Jan 31 on a premium economy fare, which the return flights mid-Feb (plus some outstanding SCs already waiting to be credited) would push me over the requisite points, I emailed QFF and asked if they would accept the return flights in Feb toward my status consideration - i.e. extend my reset date to mid-Feb. I received a phone call yesterday from them and he worked out with me all of the outstanding points to confirm it would be enough, then finished by saying that this "should be possible" and to call him back personally on my return (and once the SCs are actually credited to my account).

Really nice guy, but the use of the word "should" is non-committal, I definitely had the impression it would be honoured though.

Has anyone else experienced this offer/flexibility from QFF in the past? Should I take a "should be possible" or should I book my status run tonight for January before the DSC offer expires just to be safe?

Not worth the hassle and stress mate. They may well do it, but getting within 50 credits and then missing out will be really annoying.

After 31 Jan you're powerless. Act now.

JASA SYD CBR for 16,000 points and < $130
Red e-Deal CBR SYD < $150

Once, around 10 years ago I had similar but I was only struggling to re-qualify for PS back then (was my first year of renewing). I was going to have the requisite SC's a week after my year expired, and was told that it shouldn't be a problem too. In the end, I didn't require it as I managed to get over the line (and actually ended up around 450 SC's due to an unplanned trip happening).

Premium Economy (ZASA)

Not quite. A Y+ (PE) xASA is a WASA which books into the Z fare bucket.

I find xASA the most confusing because it can either refer to an Economy (X) class ASA or an ex-ASA (ie. the award formerly known as an ASA now made marginal by a Qantas 'enhancement').

Again, not quite. the 'x' in xASA is more like a variable 'x' in Maths, where, in this case, it can be equal to Y, W, J or F.

HTH.

How do you find it so low?? All flights I can see are $517 one-way all cash, or 16k points + $400...

You are looking at Points plus Pay which is much more expensive than a JASA, which is an Any Seat Award booked at Classic Award points level. In this case the points for a Classic award are 16,000 (you can check this yourself) and I would guess the co-pay to be under $100. Therefore a JASA can be had for 16000 points plus a larger co-pay.

Awesome, thanks! I called up and booked return Business class (figured I might as well get the Business Lounge experience a little early ;-) ) for 32k points + $245 round-trip.

Cheers for all the help guys. Townsville next time :)

BTW.... I'm booked into "Business (U)" class... seems this is correct to earn SCs / points on ASA?

p.s. Happy new year!!
