Sorry about being OT, here
... but if you go to DPS, and are lucky to come back unscathed, scam wise, you are lucky.
But if you are unlucky, and get your passport nicked, while travelling, then it all goes pear shaped.
Being overcharged for drinks or for trinklets, or for food for being a foreigner, that is just a game, or if you have your second wallet nicked, and the majority of your funds is in a secret stash in your underdaks.
But, if you loose your main source of funds, and/or passport, then its a big hassle.
Granted, NZ can be scary, with its street beggars, but they tend not to hassle, and don't pickpocket most of the time, unlike Bali and other parts of Asia.

Millions of people visit Bali each year without having their passports or cash stolen, so please stop fear mongering. It is a relatively safe place to travel if you aren't an idiot.

Granted, NZ can be scary

NZ is regularly ranked in the top 3 safest countries on Earth...

Wallets/Passports stolen in the UK = 2
Wallets/Passports stolen in Bali = 0
Guess I better tell Mrs Jase we aren’t ever going back to the UK

Same here, 3 days in a hotel not far from the airport, then onto Penang via KL, so just waiting for MH to bring on their deals and do it again.
Another good one which earned me a lot of points with my partner, I sent her to Bangkok on a shopping trip, while I did a status run with MH via KL.
Win Win
When do MH deals usually drop?

I confess I have done SYD-AKL-SYD airside only.
SYD-CHC-SYD have only stayed overnight
Have never done SYD-DPS-SYD

I have done SYD-JFK-SYD during a DSC offer for a zero to WP in 4 days. Would be crazy to turn around airside at JFK. Stayed 2 nights. At JFK, arrive Fri arvo depart Sun arvo

How many times have you been to Bali? Or maybe you just like stirring the pot and I fall for it every time.

That's classic. Being overcharged for drinks for being a foreigner. Don't bother that drinks are a fraction of the cost in Australia. I don't mind being overcharged in that situation, it's a form of donation to a developing country. I can afford it, I have a good time, and it helps people survive. Where's the problem?

Immi will have a field day on your return.
Not only on the Indonesian side, I know usually you don't have to pass immi on transit, but who knows what the Bali security officers or airport staff might do, say, **oh, you can't transit, (for what ever reason), and they make you go through Indonesian incoming immi)**.
At least entering NZ, you (if Aust PR/Aust citizen), can enter NZ without a visa.
Would you be willing to be "made" to go through Indonesian immi, not sure how much their incoming immi fee is, or outgoing one is.
If you have to do a QF status run, I would do a trip SYD - CHC (2 J, or 1 J and 1 F, or one F and a flexY), and back, or SYD - CHC with EK F, and then a flexY Y AKL back to SYD, would probably have to overnight in CHC or AKL.
You might be game to play the DPS route, but if for any reason, a plane goes techno, you are as the saying goes, stuffed!
Also, QF might just put onto JQ if they have a reason to, if the plane from SYD is inoperatable for some reason, that would be bad if you have paid for QF J.
Edit: Indonesia also has a departure tax of 200,000 IDR, about Aud$21.29.
You also might find that Smartgate might not work on your return, and you have to go through the staffed gate.
You can take this reply as useless waffle.
Indonesia departure tax is included in ticket prices nowadays, not charged separately to pax at departure airport.

The direct SYD-DPS has only 80 minutes turn around doesn’t it?
Even if it was allowed no way would I risk it
Is there any minimus stay requirement on the airfare? At any rate, just make a weekender of it. Flying R/T SYD-DPS-SYD would be necrotic.

You’ll have to clear immigration. I just flew Adl-Syd-Dps for only $899. QF43 arrives at 8pm which is a rather busy time at the immigration. It took me a good 30mins to clear the immigration, I’ve been stuck for over 1hr before so I would definitely advise against that turnaround trip. Hilton Garden Inn offers free shuttle to/from their hotel nearby and if you have HHonors points, it’s only 5000 points redemption.
Edit: in all my trips here, I’ve never ever seen any transfer desks between the arrival gates and immigration at DPS, maybe someone could correct me.
Yes, they do have a transfer desk and it is marked. Quite easy to navigate.

Trying to look at doing the “famous” J SYD-DPS-SYD status run (with flights from MEL as well)

looking on the QF website it won’t let me arrive and depart on the same day. (Ie. only stay in DPS for 1.5hrs).

how have people gotten around this?
If you have any hotel reward points, book a night at Novotel Airport Hotel (annexed to the hotel). Comfortable accommodation with good facilities. If you can negotiate a late checkout even better. Airport Premier Lounge adquate but not spectacular.

How many times have you been to Bali? Or maybe you just like stirring the pot and I fall for it every time.
Going way OT here, but...
Never been to Bali DPS.
Been to KUL many times in the 1970s, and through the airport when QF flew SYD - KUL a few years back, but am too cowardly to go there (Asia again, KUL/BKK/DPS).
Also too scared to go into KUL city centre even for a short visit.
NZ is tame enough for me.
My next fright thingo will to visit Japan, (its on the backburner), either QF via SYD with QF, or SQ via SIN, or with VA via BNE to HND, without knowing any ability to string together any semblance of ability to speak Japanese...
Maybe Dec 2020/Dec 2021/Dec 2022.
Edit: I will leave the Bali DPS "pot" well alone from now on.

Then as sbor has posted then the posts are just misinformation.

I am just curious now, not being picky, but what the bloody hell has necrotic got to do with anything, surely you are taking the proverbial, i.e.ssip

Unfortunately our pooch has a track record for spreading misinformation and commenting on things he has no experience of.

The thing that puzzles me is that in the space of a few posts the comment is made that "NZ is scary" (due to street beggars etc) then "NZ is tame enough for me" - which is it old fella?

On a more general comment not directly related to this thread...

as hinted at elsewhere by a couple of posters one can get scammed or have valuables stolen ANYWHERE.. right in your home city where you should likely feel so comfortable and safe... It doesn't have to be the notorious "hot spots" for such things. Really it's all about being vigilant and aware wherever one is and using common sense. No i don't mean walk the streets of, say, Adelaide on edge or thinking everyone is out to scam or rob you but these days unfortunately one just does need to take precaution wherever one is.

IMO.

I agree, too much misinformation, waffle, troll etc, ... and I go OT too much, but will try to tame it.
First time I saw the street beggars in AKL city (they don't carry their possessions around), in about 2013, it popped my eyes, scary as you know what, scary it sure was, then I realised, they tend to only have their tins out, or people do give them money or talk to them, then I noticed that they tend to leave pedestrians alone.
Then, of late, ADL now has a lot of rough sleepers, or beggars, (who do have huge piles of their possessions}, also they tend to leave pedestrians alone.
Like I said, I have not stepped into Indonesian soil, they might be nice people, but just reading on websites, that I don't write on, is scary enough.
Anyway, to each their own sense of security, or what's right/appropriate.
I will keep my thoughts to myself about Bali DPS or KUL from now on.
