Hi all,

I am looking at heading to Hong Kong on flights booked on the Virgin website that are operated by SQ (not Silk air) and of course I am keen to earn status points.

The fares I am looking at are economy fares called "flexi" and when I progress as far as I can with the booking without paying it lists the fare type as LLRASQ35.

On the Va website it tells me the following fare classes earn me SC's
: Singapore Airlines*: S, Y, B, E, M, H, W, U, L, K

Does anyone know if will earn SC's on the flights?

Out of curiosity I found the same flights on the SQ website and not only are they $300 cheaper for the rounds trips, they are clearly labelled W or M class fares. So second question, if I book those flights on the SQ site and enter my Velocity number will I earn SC's or do I have to be on a VA numbered flight?

Cheers
Dave (confused Dave actually)

From what I know, SQ code flights earn points and SCs but no bonus points, and on their own, separate earn tables - fare classes that earn are not necessarily the same as on VA-coded flights.

Note the earning table has footnotes, so read it carefully!

Also note if you book the VA codeshare you will almost certainly run into seat selection issues and run a much higher risk of the dreaded middle seat, if you book on the SQ site seat selection should be easily available.

If its got a VA flight number you will earn points as per the VA table, if its a SQ flight number then the above applies, so W yes M no.

if their class is listed as earning, below flexi is rare.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

True - fortunately SQ's flexis are often pretty well priced (well, apart from the very upper category which allows upgrade with KF points). Doesn't help if you're on BFOD I suppose!

Thanks very much for the replies.

What a pity the VA site doesn't show the booking class, it would make life so much easier !

Cheers
Dave.

It does, select your flights then click fare rules, the fare basis for each leg will be shown of which the first letter is the bucket.

So in that case the booking class is: LLRASQ35.....L = a good for for points.

Thanks very much I have learnt something today !

Cheers
Dave.

PS: Unfortunately my wife just called and the week we were looking at is a block out period for leave at her work place....:(

I can confirm you will definitely earn if you're in an eligible bucket booked through the SQ website, on an earning fare class. (Flexi saver usually is, but check the fare class as you've done).

As pointed out above you won't earn bonus velocity points, but the fares are often a fair bit cheaper direct through SQ.

I've found that VA prices tend to cost around $30 - $50 dollars more than booking via SQ. The only thing would be no bonus points booing direct with SQ. Just make sure it's not a T, V, Q fare on SQ and you will be fine.

To be honest I am not that concerned about the mileage points, the SC's are what I am after as this trip @ full economy earn with family pooling would get earn me 400SC's and put me up to Platinum :-)

Cheers
Dave.

Your only other thing to consider is whether you need the va sectors to count towards your plat qual. On the sq flight number it won't count, yet it will if it's VA.
