Would love this! Frequently travel to MEL and another option would be great! Currently stay @ Sheraton Melbourne, which is fantastic, but more alternatives are always welcome. I will be following this possibility keenly.

Can anyone advise the rough $$ ballpark W in Oz would be? Is it in the range of Westin Melbourne (AFAIK regularly >$400/n for a standard room)?

I wouldn't be surprised it to be $350 +- $50 and a Category 5 property, and probably as mid $200's during LTO promotions

I thought the palace hotel was becoming a W?

I believe you mean The Palace Theatre, and there was significant opposition from various groups who wanted to keep the building as a part of the musical heritage of Melbourne. For the part of the developers, they wanted to completely demolish the building; at the very least, strip out the inside.

It's unclear from recent stories where everyone - the people who oppose any hotel or apartment development, and the developers themselves - stands on this one.
