Interesting article in the guise of a blog on the USA TSA web site relating to changes to the L/A/G* quart/litre bag rules in the next two years or so:

Fall-2009: Size restriction removed, but all liquids will have to be placed in a separate bin. AT X-Ray software will be advanced enough to tell the difference between threat and non-threat but not yet proven to tell the difference when it is hidden in a bag.

End of 2010: No restrictions. AT X-Ray will have upgraded software that is proven to detect threat liquids in any configuration and is deployed in enough places so that TSA can change the rules to meet one uniform standard for the country.

This is great news - although it needs to be followed by other countries to make a comprehensive difference. 2010 is still a long time though... At leas by Fall 2009 I will be able to use my Tumi wash bag full time

Thank goodness.It really is a pain.I have used a small spray on deodorant for use on long flights or during connection times.It is 79gm which features prominently on the front so has got through 26 airports even BNE!However in the small print on the back it says it is 102 mls.An eagle eyed HKG security fellow with obviously too much time on his hands read every word and confiscated it-sure by the book but....He did ask whether I wanted to use the rest but I resisted the urge to empty what ever was left all over him.Unfortunately this is the smallest spray on I have been able to find.

It is an antideodorant/antiperspirant which is why I got it.I can perspire in alaska in winter.

I really dont pay much attention to brands-we bought it in Italy.
On this trip we did find another but in Ecuador which is the same size but they put the conversion at 100ml so safe.Goes by the great name of Teen Spirit-but manufactured in South america.Also havent tried it yet so cant say if any good.

Ah ok - thought it was an Aussie brand. I have not been able to find a 100ml aerosol here.

Have not been able to find any sub100ml/100g aerosol deoderants, and the liquid roll-on ones have a habit of well, leaking. (icky mess that)

Managed to find some sub-100ml shaving gels which is good.

As reported previously, I switched to shaving oil - King of Shaves is good but I now use Dermalogica.

This is great news - although it needs to be followed by other countries to make a comprehensive difference.

One of the machines they're testing along with the whole body x-ray scanner in ADL and MEL is supposed to "detect threat agents" in liquids. So hopefully, Australia will follow soon.

Just back from the stupidmarket and note that the small Rexona spray antiperspirants are now only marked as 100gm with no mention now of volume(is~150ml).Should do the trick.

I found a 90g aim toothpaste as most other brands are over 110g. I travel with hand luggage only, so hope they relax the rules a little.

I have a Rexona deodorant that i picked up in a supermarket in OOL that is 60g. Not the stuff that i would normally like to wear but it does atisfy most rules...

Don't you guys drive? Almost every servo in Sydney sells ~60gm Rexona anti-perspirant sprays (both men and women) for around $4. They're the same ones you get in the QF F Amenity kits.

PS: Wal-mart is brilliant for TSA-friendly items. Practically anything you can think of in sub-100mL!

Does anyone know if the TSA confiscates the Qantas Business or First amenity kits. Even though everything is small and would probably pass the size tests, I don't usually open these but do stick them into my hand luggage before I get onto an AA conecting flight.

So far nobody has said anything - what are other's experiences?

I have never had any problems either even though unopened.On one occasion mrsdrron had some moisturiser she had used in the lounge and did not put it back in the ziplock bag-the TSA allowed her to put it there when she was pulled up.Obviously with the TSA though it depends on the agent.

I'm dubious about the ability of scanners to detect "threat liquids" in a closed container. Seems to me that the diverse range of gels, oils, aerosols, liquids, medicines etc. etc. would exhibit a huge range of reactions to whatever technology they are using.

It sounds like a way of phasing out the stupid liquid check system without admitting that it's been a farce from Day One.

technically you should transfer all the liquids to your transparent zip-lock bag before going through the screening point. I have never had any such items confiscated and I usually remember to take them out of the original amenities kit and into the zip-lock bag. But on more than one occasion I have forgotten to transfer them and they remained in the kit in my carry-on bags. They have never been identified or confiscated even when remaining in my carry-on bag.
