SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

So on the phone to SQ re the downgrade F to J due to change to the A350. Got a wonderful agent first up.He knew that he had to transfer to the redemption team. He stayed on the line though. the member of the redemption team was inflexible and wouldn't budge on not being able to create saver awards from the revenue bucket. Ended with you will then have to accept a full refund. I said that is not acceptable. At that point the initial agent came back on the line. He said he took notes and has all the details and is going to directly contact the senior member of the redemption team to try and get it done and I will either get a call back or email with the result.
@boomy I did read out the bit in your post re the 4th award change.

I had the exact same experience with a negative result. Got an email saying it can’t be done. Hope your experience will be different but if not then call again and keep pushing until they approve the change because there is absolutely no reason why they wouldn’t move you. Don’t give up!

Have flights waitlisted from Europe to Oz in J. Am a little worried that they will not come through. If I book a seat in Y is it possible to then confirm J waitlist and cancel the Y booking? Would need to use the points used to book Y to confirm J.
Also, is it possible, should I not be offered a seat in J, to subsequently ask for an upgrade as late as at check in?

Yep. That's why I am worried. Just booked a backup Y, but not extremely happy if I have to use it! Never know your luck ;). Hopefully someone up there is looking after me!

Strange thing is that I saw my Y flight last night and thought "Nah, don't want to be stuck in Y at my age", so I went to bed. This morning I woke up with a clear head and thought "what have I passed up!". So I set out to look for J availability (nothing) and the Y seat I saw last night.
It took several attempts searching MXP-PER and ZRH-PER as I couldn't remember where I saw Y availability. After about 5 goes I found the Y seat I was looking for (in September). Can't explain why I had to search more than once to find it. Anyone shed any light on how this could happen?

no Y+ available as a middleground?

Unfortunately not. Can't find one out of MXP, FCO, ZRH, CDG, FRA, MUC..... Though keen to fly out of MXP or ZRH if possible. I am a bit limited, looking at 6 days from the 19th Sep. Will keep looking!

Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for choosing to fly with Singapore Airlines. The below itinerary is eligible for mySQupgrade our Instant upgrade programme*.

I thought great I'll give it a burl. Hit the get upgraded button and this is what you get. We are 69 hours from our flights departure time.
It seems like we can’t find any offers at this moment, please try again later, between 72 hrs and 6 hrs before departure.

SQ really doesn't like me. Wants to inflict maximum pain. o_O

We got those too. Several of them, for the same flight. Never once did they ‘find an offer’, even though the front cabin didn’t go out full. Not blaming them, and i understand SQ’s premium cabin policy, but it feels like these are sent to every passenger on every flight!

These cash upgrade offers don’t seem to be such a good value. My friend got an offer to upgrade himself and his wife from J to F on the overnight SIN-MEL 777 for $1,300 USD pp. As much as they love flying F it was no brainer to decline.

pretty much everything SQ is going out full these days. in late June finding the right combo of flts (to Europe in our case) took more than a month of waitlists, A/C and time changes, and things havnt got easier Since then. In the meantime it’s apparently judged good relations to put out these ‘offers’, as if the company is being flexible (when ofc they can’t be due demand etc.) Recently had several upgrade offers for a chain hotel booking that cudnt offer any upgrade when we actually tried..

Trying to get revenue F seats in May next year - slim pickings!

well that’s a challenging thought - can’t even pay for F nearly a year out.. don’t they know who we are?

as mentioned abv, we took a month in May/June thru a travel agent to get an itin - out to LHR Sept, back home from ZRH - that wasn’t too ridiculous. Really wanted to come back with Swiss F (basis SQ codeshare) but that never happened. Finished up with a split J/F class fare, something the TA said today we probly cudnt get right now, even if seats were avail, and a return itin that entails 18h layover in Sin.

you also hv to think SQ will use A350s where they can, cheaper to run, fewer crew etc so there’s another impediment.

there will be somebody here who knows something about dynamic pricing - am convinced that the more one trawls the SQ (and no doubt other) websites, the less choice becomes avail at the same time as prices increase..

I was looking to do a LH 'RTW' in First but SYD-SIN in SQ, SIN-FRA in LH, ZRH-SIN in LX and SIN-SYD on SQ again ... but it priced almost the same as a straight out SQ First fare all the way (could do a leg of LX codeshare if I wanted) which was more flexible, so I got the TA to look at that. Shocked at the lack of availability. Still haven't booked it, looking at options. Not gunna do J this time.

Random search shows good availability for SYD/SIN in May both ways on 380 and 777. Maybe the issue is with LH / LX?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. Little availability on the days I want to fly +/- a day. I have several constraints (tour timings) so less flexibility than I would normally have. I'm likely going to have to take a later tour and shift the whole itinerary forward.

Has anybody had any experience checking in early in BKK? Looks like I'll be stuck there for 6 hours between flights, doesn't seem like long enough to do anything meaningful in town. SQ seem to have a flight every few hours, so I'm hoping the check in desks are permanently manned and I can while away the time in a few lounges.
