SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

CX J MEL-HKG-PVG via AA - cheap but so is the product.

Jeez MEL you are amazing - if I said it was black you would say it is white - I already posted May 5 I am flying CX to PVG - you are consistently on here in this thread crowing about how much the CX product is better than SQ because you get 10hrs sleep - now you say you would never accept a 'cheap product' - simply amazing.

So how is CX MEL - tolerable or just a 'cheap product' to be avoided? And then returning on QF J - 'cheap product'? Jeez the masses of QF lovers on AFF are going to love you referring to their beloved QF as a 'cheap product'.

You said CX was a 'cheap' product.

I am happy with CX J - it is excellent for what it offers (all business classes have their own pros and cons).

What I was saying was that no matter how much I valued AA points, I would not settle for a product that I thought was 'cheap' (as you said for CX). For example there's plenty of availability on MH out of Australia - but I choose not fly MH. It doesn't matter how cheap it is via AA, MH is not on my list. For you, SQ is wide open in F for 5 May (not sure what date you are returning, so I don't know if that's also available, F class does fill up, even well in advance).

807 dep PEK yesterday 26th 16:40 sch to arrive SIN 23:20 - then I have 217 dep 10:45 today - 11:20 mins in SIN I was tossing up stay in ST hotel or head into town - given vagaries of PEK dep more than likely will be dep delay meaning later arr into SIN so decided on ST hotel.

Called from PEK on 25th and advised T3 fully booked but I can get into T2 - ok so booked it 01:00-07:00. Amazing PEK dep right on time so arr time 11:20 - had to go buy shaver, deodorant lip balm etc as all left behind in PEK then into lounge for couple more Champers which I certainly didn't need.

Skytrain across to T2 to ST hotel and arrive 12:40 - checking in staff tell me 'There will be considerable noise from now to 06:00 as we mid renovation so you may not get much sleep!' WTF? Isn't the purpose of providing a ST hotel airside so people can catch a few hours sleep before next flight? This has Seinfeld written all over it!

Well I want to sleep - you sure no spare rooms in T3 - let me check - Yes Sir you can get a room in T3 - OMG - Now we talking Fawlty Towers. Back on to Skytrain and back to T3 - up to ST hotel and yes got a room for - JohnnyK - A$87 for 6 hrs - beats sitting upright in Gold Lounge - bed A$87 - entertainment priceless!

@MEL - MEL I have rechecked the details of the issuance of PJs and Amenity Kits with IFS on both ret flts PEK-SIN and SIN-MEL - changes to times actually occurred about 6mths ago - it is black and white as I posted earlier - PJs will be issued to R/F pax under following:

Long Haul - all flts day or night scheduled 7hrs or longer

Short Haul - night flts scheduled 3.5hrs or longer with sch departure times 18:00 and 06:00.

Note: Flt length defined by actual dep to arr time - not flying time but sch time - ie 217 dep SIN 11:45 arr MEL 21:10 has sch time 7hrs 25mins but actual flight time 6hrs 45mins.

Much simpler now MEL as it was a bit confusing before but these new defined times now much clearer.

And now a simple solution to the unbearably hot SQ sleeper suits - ie PJs provided onboard - just get one of the gorgeous female crew members to take to the top piece with a pair of sharp scissors and gay abandon - snip off the sleeves and that gussety thingy piece in neck line:

I'm just so relieved that the 'gussety' bit was only removed from the neck line.

I always ask for a Singapore Sling in Y when the drinks trolley comes around. But I'm never sure whether what I get includes all the ingredients it's supposed to have. It seems disappointingly low in alcoholic content.

Agreed. Particularly as a drink with 'sling' in its name.

Way back before I discovered AFF and I did 100 Oz-China-Oz flts on SQ in Y they used to serve Champers - no memory of label but it was def French - after Champs withdrawn drink choices varied bw red wine / Bloody Mary's / G & Ts - somehow always found something that would keep me lubricated.

A mate of mine had one in Raffles last week and they cost $31 SGD each
OT but we stayed in Raffles several times - one night after dinner I decided to have an extra glass of Bolly Rose and a cigar - Cruiserette kindly volunteered to pay - was still p**sing myself laughing at the priceless look on her face 24hrs later when the bill for $120 was presented to her.

Times certainly changed in the style of our travelling. We each used two suites coming home from London and the service was terrific as always. There were 5 in Suites and we ran with the A and C Suites each. Our aircraft had to be subbed out and the SQ folks had a smooth rebooking group working the changed seats from the 8 hour delay. We were very happy with how SQ recovered from an A380 going tech. That is a lot of people to deal with.

I have to have a chuckle when I hear stories like that, as it reminds me of my first trip to Raffles in '86. Myself and two mates started on the slings in the Long Bar and after a few dozen too many we moved to the Garden Bar and ordered another round. After the waitress left to get our drinks, a young Aussie couple beside us leaned a little closer and whispered to us ......they're so expensive, we're sharing one! (They were AU$6 back then).

.........for everything else, there was AMEX!;)

...

In the late '70's and '80's as a young engineer I visited Singapore regularly. Initially I would have to pin my hair up to get through immigration. Sometimes they would hand you scissors to trim some off before granting you entry!
Raffles would sometimes be an early evening destination on the way out for the night which would entail a 'Sling in the garden bar and a cigar. A tray displaying an array of cigars would be presented and you selected your poison. The cigar-man would snip the end off with a cigar cutter and light it for you. A peek back into the last vestiges of a Colonial colony life.
