We are looking at booking flights MEL-USM via SIN on SQ/MI - 2 adults and 2 kids.

Have checked the Velocity Rewards earning tables and see that N, Q, T, V classes on SQ do not earn points but do earn SC.

Of the remaining Y fare classes that do earn points, which are the cheapest fare buckets? Preferably we would like to earn points for the MEL-SIN legs of the trip (particularly as they will be pooled to my account :D)

Generally W class is the cheaper of the earning fare buckets on SQ.

Got to love SQ too, even W class which is discount economy earns at full economy rate.

Maybe I am reading the tables incorrectly, but from what I can tell, if a class is ineligible to earn Velocity points, it is ineligible to earn SC's.

Points Earn with Airline Partners | Velocity Frequent Flyer

N, Q T & V classes are specifically listed as ineligible.

When travelling on eligible Singapore Airlines fares and flights with a Singapore Airlines (SQ) flight number, you can earn Points on your ticket.
You can also earn Status Credits on all eligible fare types.

No I believe you are correct - it was my misreading of the earning tables .

Total fare difference from V class up to the next available earning class is about $1,000 - just need to consider if the 240SC and approx 27,000 points are worth the additional $1K

Re: Sq fare classes for velocity earn

Usually H & W are the cheapest of the 'Full Y' on SQ, or the ones I've always seen anyway. Usually a Flexi-Saver will give you these, but a 'Sweet Deal' won't. You can check quite easily on the SQ website in the "view summary of fare conditions" at the bottom of the flight selection page, so you can compare a number of flights quite easily.

Our work only allows long haul in Y, and on a competitively priced ticket (we can choose airline as long as it is no more than 10% above cheapest fare, though realistically we can go a bit over if it is not extravagant. We are required to show three quotes), so I now pretty much always use SQ for my long-haul to Europe or Asian or African trips.

I find the Y tickets in SQ to be the most rewarding for the least amount of money for any international Velocity flights IMHO - even better than VA itself. They offer twice the SCs and usually about 50% more points than a similarly priced VA/EY/DL flight. But it's all or nothing, if you get the wrong class you won't get anything.

Also, USM is MI not SQ, so you won't get anything that leg, no matter what class the ticket.

Fares are a mix of W and K class so actually would be a total of 480 SC between the 4 of us - I had missed that these earn at full Y. So I think I have answered that question at least......

I noticed this on the velocity site. Does this also apply to SQ codeshares on MI metal?

The verbage states that "SilkAir operated flights are not eligible for Points or Status Credits accrual." so pretty sure it doesn't matter if it's an SQ codeshare or not.

(Similar to if you're on a SQ codeshare on Lufthansa, for example, you can't earn anything)

I recently did a trip SYD-SIN-NRT-SIN-SYD in W, W, C, C and it was fantastic (especially C/J class!)
Business points and status have posted, but no sign of the other legs yet (different itineraries). I've done some chasing but have nothing happening yet...

Re: Sq fare classes for velocity earn

Yep. I've been bitten on this before. Anything on MI metal will get nada, no matter what class and even if it has a SQ flight number.

With four of you should still get 480SCs though on the SIN leg alone, as MEL/ADL/PER/SYD/BNE-SIN is 60SCs each way. They'll accrue on each sector, meaning you'll earn on MEL-SIN, but not on SIN-USM. Still a better SC deal than you'll get elsewhere.

There's a few VA partners you've got to watch carefully. DL flight numbers on AS metal are another repeat offender, most of their West Coast routes will earn zip as DL codeshares most of that side of the US.
