I will be flying Singapore Airlines to south-east Asia shortly.
I have a flexi economy ticket purchased already, and I noticed I could upgrade one, or both sectors to business class.
Both sectors are on the same ticket, and there is a two-hour layover at SIN.

If I upgrade JUST the second sector to Business class, what is the luggage allowance I will get on my first sector?
(ie, will I get the additional 10KGs for both flights, as they are ticketed together?)

... Yes, I am trying to find a hack to get extra baggage for my trip without paying hundreds in excess fees.

FYI: Singapore Airlines has responded to my enquiry.

Luggage allowance is per sector... So, even if two sectors are on the same ticket, I will only get 30KG on the first economy sector and 40KG on the second business sector (effectively making it 30 kg luggage allowance for the flight).

Seems pretty poor service, but understandable.

I tried to find more info on this but nothing on SQ's website. There was however an FAQ on the Emirates website and they have the same policy as SQ... if you upgrade only one sector of a journey the extra baggage allowance only applies to the upgraded sector!

So what happens if you upgrade the 1st leg, and check your luggage all the way through?

I dunno! Maybe check-in won't accept the bag unless the excess is paid for the relevant onwards sectors?
You very well might be right, but that would be really rich if an airline does that: this is analogous to an international business class flight with domestic leg in Y, where the international luggage allowance applies to the whole itinerary (at least, this is based on my own experiences)

That's right - there are rules for 'paid' tickets (award or $$) which govern the through-check of bags and applicable allowances. But it seems at least some airlines treat partial upgrades differently.
