Flying out of MEL soon on SQ218 which departs at five past midnight. I have a function in the city which I am unlikely to get away from until 10.15pm or so, May well get to the airport around 11pm.

Will do online checkin obviously but what is the latest I can check in luggage (I need checked luggage for the trip alas).

The website has a useful file listing check-in counter times suggesting that the counter closes 40 minutes before departure:
Check-in at Airport-Singapore Airlines

Is the 40 minutes the cut off for the bag drop as well? Anyone have experiences about getting through security and such at that time of night?

I imagine security+immigration will take you about 5 minutes.

i regularly do that flight and usually leave home in an inner SE suburb at around 9.50, usually an easy run through check in, immigration etc, although usually no lounge time as SQ goes from the very far gates and so you do have to walk the full length of the airport.

i wouldn't leave any later than 10.15,that should get you to the airport by 10.50 depending where in the city you are.

Cut off is definitely 40mins . We've got there about 55mins out with no dramas. For the midnight flights, most people get to the airport quite early, and SQ is one of the later flights, so immigration and security shouldn't be a problem. I certainly find that the closer you are to departure, unless there are other flights leaving a little while (say an hour) after, the immigration queues become almost non existent.
