Does anyone know of a spray/aerosol that frequent flyers can use on aircraft that will protect yourself from picking up influenza from other passengers. Parbs

Unless you have something that saturates the air around you with bleach for the duration of the entire flight, then such a thing is impossible.

Vaccinations against influenza however are cheap and easily obtainable, and actually work.

This is how I prefer to travel

In all seriousness, I carry Betadine gargle when we travel and both husband and I use it during/after flights and most evenings before bed when travelling.

It might not amount to much but I do believe its stopped cold like symptoms/sore throat before they got worse.

No such product exists.

Anyone that tells you that they've heard of such a product or has used a product like this for years without catching a cold is someone who is sucked in by marketing hype and placebos. Placebos work best on those who don't understand science.

Washing your hands is the best product available!

That stuff is horrible!

Actually there is a spray I have used for years with success to avoid colds etc. It is no longer available in Australia but can be purchased online cheaply from Britain. It is called Vicks First Defence. I highly recommend it. Here is a link to reviews Vicks First Defence Reviews - ProductReview.com.au

Assuming you are referring to the following product, it does not appear to be what the OP was asking about:

Vicks First Defence nasal spray

This appears to be a product to deal with a cold AFTER the symptoms develop. And is therefore not what the OP was asking about. I would caution against using a medical product contrary to its stated purpose.

Yes - but I use it once or twice on long haul flights BEFORE symptoms develop with success. As do others. (Especially if someone is couthing/sneezing nearby)

A nasal spray isn't going to do anything at all.

There is nothing on the market for what the original poster wanted.

'The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and prevent flu.'

:idea:As Dr Ralph has said washing your hands is the best. You can buy lavender (eucalyptus and tea tree oil )in small aerosol cans from the supermarkets(not sure about aerosol on a/c though,so you may be able to get a small demister /spray bottle and make up your own eucalyptus/lavender water solution and spray around your area and seats etc.You can get the diluting solution at the supermarket/health/chemists also . I clean at home with it ,besides the vinegar and bi carb treatments.Vinegar is great for shining tiles.

Actually there is some science in it
For example:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25411637

Perhaps, but leaving aside my concerns over these reports as contrasted with significant evidence to the contrary, you have still failed to note that these trials were for reducing the duration of the symptoms NOT prevention of the illness:

'Clinical trials applying iota-carrageenan nasal spray have previously shown to reduce duration of virus-confirmed common cold. '

&

'
This study investigated the efficacy and safety of an Iota-Carrageenan nasal spray in patients with common cold symptoms.'

Once again not what the OP was asking about.

whatever...I've used it for both purposes and it works for me and it seems for others. Up to each individual whether they want to try it or not.

Anything is worth a try:DI read once many years ago that red wine kills viruses.Maybe a drop of red on a the journey ?
