Hi All

Took a risk and booked 4 tickets heading to Auckland with the new borders announced. Booked parents in J and a seperate booking for the kids (aged 17 and 8 together) in Y. A330 so I’ve booked them into the two seats by themselves closest to the wing. They are experienced flyers.
Anyone else done this? The wife and I are a little uneasy about it... so hoping it’s something that’s not uncommon??

Thanks

That should be ok, as one child is 17. If you're flying on Qantas, they say having someone under 10 is ok as long as they are travelling with the supervision of:
  • the child's parent or guardian
  • the child's sibling 15 years or older
  • an adult nominated by the child's parent or guardian (including if the child is travelling in a different class or cabin to that person).
If it's not Qantas, you should double check to make sure the 8 year old isn't treated as an Unaccompanied Minor.

In any event, be prepared for them to tell the flight attendants and other passengers around them, how they've been abandoned by their parents, dumped in economy while their parents live the high life in Bus etc etc... Just as well it's only a short flight

Thanks for that very helpful info... we are flying with Qantas so should all be good.

Few years back had business trip in J CNS/HKG/CNS (all CX), wife came with me but in Y, she said for 6 hour fight rather spend few grand in the markets and shops there. I passed her at the entry gate with a wave, putting my case etc away up top, then or some unknown reason I looked around there she was in next isle in J! in rear of cabin, on return flight ditto and yes she did enjoy the shopping, even bought me a long 24crt chain, its worth a hell of a lot today, good result all round.

Can't see how this would be a concern at all. I did exactly that with my 17 & 19 y.o. on an A330 to NRT via HKG ex SYD. These two have in fact a fair bit of unaccompanied minor travelling experience since they were 5 & 7 y.o. really.

Also split cabins with family a couple times. Similar trip on MH to KUL, pineapple in J on a work trip to central asia, Mrs Pineapple getting off in KL to spend some of the proceeds.

In the interest of domestic harmony I swapped with Mrs Pineapple on the way back. I got a bulkhead window with vacant middle so it wasn't a bad deal.MH FAs were agog when I did this, I got the impression it wasn't a malaysian custom. I also got excellent service.😀

On this topic, I would like to book some Qantas award flight (qf metal) me in J and the wife in Y. Just as a status credit optimisation to retain WP more easily, while minimizing points spending. Is it ok If I swap seat at boarding time? Do I need to notify the flight attendent? Are seats swapable during the flight, or is it frown upon?

That's great information.

I have thought about this often. My boys will be shocked when they find out that they are flying Y together whilst the adults fly J. They turn 15 next year (not that we have any flights booked yet).
