Splitting cabins when travelling with companion

"If they reject, I’d much rather downgrade and be seated in economy. I usually want to spend time with the person I’m traveling with"

That's crazy talk!

If my husband knocked back an upgrade, I would call him an idiot.

Been married for 30 years, just been on a 15 day cruise stuck in a small cabin with each other, plan on being married another 30 years. To hell with it, i'll take the pointy end

A few months ago we got on a flight with 1-2 configuration, hubby was in A seat and me across the aisle. A guy offered to swap a couple of times, I told him we just spent 14hrs on a plane sitting together, we needed the alone time.

Couple of years back booked CX flight in J CNS/HKG/CNS, Mrs lime sad she'll go Y and spend the rest in HKG!, I waved to her at the gate, arrived at my seat put my things down, spoke with pax next seat, then a sixth sense became me as I was putting my computer bag in the overhead locker, looked over the other side of the J cabin and there she was Mrs. lime nicely seated and waving, well would you believe on return flight same thing happened bumped up yet again, did she go shopping, the credit cards said yes :)

Our bookings on an EK flight weren't properly linked. At checkin MrP offered upgrade to F (WP) and I wasn't. I was excited for him for his first F flight. Told him to take all the cosmetics etc for me. He wanted me to take it but checkin tried and couldn't swap. All good. Got to boarding and I got a red light. Yay. We were both upgraded to F. But there was no issue if one was up front and the other didn't. Spoiled us both though.

You're one of the very few that feels that way. Thankfully my wife is the same.

Why are women so bitter? Unless you are travelling together with young kids or you're an extremely nervous flyer there is no reason to refuse an upgrade.

Definitely. I reckon because we were so nice about just one being upgraded at checkin (rather than make a fuss we did the opposite) was the reason why the Emirates person put through a request for me. Someone later didn't get 'their' upgrade. Sometimes good to be an early bird.

Couldn't agree more with you.
No way either of us would knock back an upgrade!!

We're looking forward to our first split cabin family trip over Xmas. CDG-HKG kids are in J and we'll be enjoying F Pity we have to slum it with them on the connecting HKG-BNE in J☹️

The trouble with knocking back an op-up is that it's highly likely your original seat has already been reassigned to someone else so the situation ends up being like trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together.

So its a community service, for the greater good, to accept all upgrade offers! :)

We're not!

As an aside, I got an upgrade on LAX-AKL and TomVexille did not. We discussed it before I put in the request, and both agreed there was no point wasting the upgrade certificate. No issues either as he can sleep in Y, and I definitely dont.

My very first J trip was a points upgrade SYD-NRT on QF. I was travelling with Mr Timtammi but we were on separate tix. We both put in for upgrades knowing that it was unlikely we would both get them and I drew the lucky straw. Sure, he was envious but he was happy for me, I was delirious and couldn't get up the front fast enough :) Since then, we have been lucky enough to manage to travel in J most of the time for our longer haul flights and most of the time together. But if it doesn't work out that way then good luck to the one enjoying the upgrade!

LOL. We must be following different threads on AFF although this thread is struggling to get off the ground. ;)
I'm seeing people, both male and female, saying they are happy if their OH gets an upgrade.

I've joked about this with the wife as we tentatively plan a trip to Europe. Suggested I would use points to travel in J at least one way, and she can stay in Y both legs.
She actually said that would be fine.... but I would have to take the baby with me.
Suddenly a less appealing idea.

Sounds reasonable to me, given more space in J....plus unfair to be stuck with Y and a baby. Can't have both....

I guess. I'm actually more inclined to book her in J, me in Y, and then see how I go requesting an upgrade at check in.
Much rather she travelled in comfort either way.
