Spirit Airlines to charge up to $45 for carry on hand luggage

I really don't understand the angst here. It costs the airline $X to get you from a to b and they want to make $Y profit. How they carve up $X+$Y between pax should be irrelevant. Unless you are going to be truly full service to all pax (i.e. no extra fees) then I see no issue with giving people the choice on how they construct their fares. Some people travel with no hand but heaps of checked luggae and vise versa.

If things go according to plan in the next couple of months if I go to MEL for the day - I might just take an ipad and nothing else. It would be nice to get a discount on my fare for that...

I'm not sure I get it either, after all no one is being compelled to fly Spirit if they don't want to. There's a lot of competition in the market they're in and some airlines (JetBlue for example) are making a point of marketing that they're different and won't be doing this. For some people, this kind of offering might work quite well, especially given that they've reduced the cost of checking in luggage.

Vote with your dollars and fly the carrier that offers the product that's right for you.
