SPG! Going for Gold!

Yep worked a treat. Been gold for maybe a week or 2 so think it came up within 2 weeks of the stay posting. Lined up with the double points promo and the new to spg bonus free stay.
Plus I booked the opening Sheraton special for Melbourne so in total I got quadruple points, a free night anywhere in the world at any level hotel and gold status..
Pretty chuffed for a quick night on a DSC status run...

Winning on so many levels.

Yep mine worked too. Just came through then 1 week from my stay. I booked and paid on Amex. Used the 6digits for the world card from this forum as I don't have one. But just in case I paid for $1.30 for the herald scum on my regular MasterCard debit card.

Fingers crossed for a good upgrade in Langkawi.

Back in May I posted on this thread about registering with the jap worldmaster card. I finally got a chance for my first stay last Friday at The Westin Sydney (paid with AMEX though). Today the points posted on my SPG app. However still no Gold. Neither is the free night for using the app to book and stay by 31 August. How long does it take to come into effect or can I assume I didn't get the Gold (nor the free night) ?

Just got upgraded to gold , been checking daily. So one week after my stay.
I saw the new member free night award posted too but can only see in the website login and not the app. Need to call to book I think since it's not shown under Awards.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can answer a couple of questions

It appears you don't have to actually use the Mastercard, my CBA account has an AMEX companion card and with the better point earn would much prefer to use. Has this been what most people have done or should I just play it safe and use the mastercard

Does every booking count, ie can I use one of their best rate deal or does it have to be a normal night tariff

I've already booked some accommodation in Europe next year using cash and points. Will I get the benefits of Gold for these especially the potential room upgrade and less importantly, late checkout and free internet

Nick, you need to register with a World Mastercard but can pay with any other card. That's what happened to me. Thanks to markis10 help/info/advice, I registered with a World Mastercard and stayed at Westin Sydney last month for a night, paid with my Qantas Amex (2 points/$1). Got the Gold upgrade a week after the stay.

My stay at Westin Sydney was a hot escape discounted rate so any stay is fine. Do note the promotion is for asia pacific region hotel so I am not sure if Europe stay will work. I would suggest staying somewhere for at least a night in asiapacific after you register, then you will get to enjoy the Gold benefit in Europe next year. I stayed at Sheraton Fiji 3 days after upgraded (booked way back in May) and got a room upgrade, free internet and the bonus points as Gold member. When check in they still thought I am a normal preferred member but on showing my Gold status they immediately gave me a room upgrade.

Yes, I was intending to stay a night in Sydney this year and hoping that the nights I have in Europe will see me receive any gold benefits. I was wondering though if points plus pay bookings I have made for that trip will also be included

I think it should though maybe somebody with prior experience can comment/confirm.

I'm going to Europe myself in a month's time - Westin Palace Madrid. Room booked from the 2x free nights earned as a new member (one after Westin Sydney stay, one after Sheraton Fiji stay). From my online chat with the SPG rep, was told I will get my Gold benefit with the usual caveat "pending room availability on check in".

In my experience you didnt actually have to use a MC only register that you had one.

Yes richh1833 that should be it. Though it have to be an asia pacific hotel as per terms and condition.
