I'm flying today in Y and have a space available upgrade request in the system (QANTAS very kindly gave me the voucher when I cut my lip open on a chipped glass in J last year).

I'm curious as to when the upgrade will show (if approved). Online check in shows me in Y, so what happens next?
 
The answer is the lounge call you about 10 mins before boarding and give you a beautiful J boarding pass :)

Dang, on a J flight en route to NAN I noticed my glass was cracked and handed it back before using it. What a sucker!
 
It can also happen at the gate when boarding. As happened to me a couple of times.
