SOF-NPL ~AU$4,500 return in J with Star Alliance carriers

A German blog has flagged quite a nice J fare from Sofia to... New Plymouth, NZ of all places!

I did a bit of searching on Google Flights and found a few examples of this fare available on the Austrian website. The routings vary but you can go (for example):

• SOF-FRA-SIN-AKL-NPL on Lufthansa/SQ/Air New Zealand
• NPL-AKL-PVG-VIE-SOF on Air New Zealand & Austrian

Various dates around December and January.

Fine if you want to go to New Plymouth. But what about the additional costs to get to/from where you want to be in Australia.

And one has to wonder why this fare exists at all...

I was in Sofia (SOF) a few weeks ago...quite an interesting city...Eastern Europe so less tourists and everything much cheaper. One of our AFFers daughter works in a ski field not far from Sofia. ...apparently one of the cheaper places to ski in Europe
