SMH: Frequent Flyers Left Out In The Cold

Is it a slow news day, or did someone somewhere signed some contracts stating that some bashings on some ff programs must be done some time every so often?

A little from column A, a little from column B...

Again I generally agree with the premise of the column, FF programs are not all they are cracked up to be unless you put the BIS miles in as well as the spend. Personally I think the SC was an excellent way of differentiating between the FF'ers who fly a lot, and the "FF'ers" who simply spend a lot. (I strongly suspect there are some in the second group who have never brought a plane ticket with actual cash in their life)

Although the JASA and FASA changed that meaning people could fly "free" and still get status. Not that I'm complaining as I have one of each this year as well!

A friend of mine proudly put a photo up on facebook of her new espresso machine saying 'free thanks to QFF'.

I shudder to think how many points she wasted on that.

I also have another friend that said '10 years of saving up Fly Buys points has paid for my MEL-LAX Y return ticket'. I don't think she was maximising her earning potential somehow

There was an amuisng report on ACA last week about how ridiculous the redemption levels for Fly Buys and WOW ER were - like having to spend $16,000+ for a $100 MEL-SYD ticket. That being said, as bad as the redemption levels are, if you are just paying for everything on a non-point earning card you won't earn anything. It's better to get 1 flight every $16,000 than nothing!!

True, a couple of well placed FASA's would get you to WP and only costing a few hundred in "taxes", but I'd be curious to know how many WP's there are who have not spent a single dollar on airfares (either their own money or someone else's, ignoring taxes of course). I'd expect it's not many.

They simply won't know or worry about status, I would say.

I shudder to think how many points she wasted on that.

I have burnt 45K points on a Nespresso machine - I didnt have the spare $500 after Christmas and was sat on a healthy balance of points so it was good value to me. It wont make the difference between getting the next award flight and not getting it so the value of the points does vary at times.

We haven't felt any chilly winds on redeeming points for flights.
I think the stupid articles by SMH are a real help for our AFF members.

Re: SMH Article - are we shallow, egotistical nobodies in search of yet another freeb

irene probably believes in us earing the points so the poor can fly

I wonder if she's redeemed for a $50 iTunes gift card

Doubt she flies enough to redeem for one, but instead, she's sitting there with a calculator trying to work out how much she needs to shop before she can make a redemption.

We did pick up two suites each on the SQ A380 to get to the Olympics in London seeing there were only 3 passengers in a 12 suite cabin. One for dining and movies and the other for sleeping.
I can recommend this as a "must do" experience if you get a chance to run up some Kris points.

Mrscove remains a Qantas girl first so nothing changes there.

By the way the plane upgrade was a complete fluke and all we did was book SQ First on the 777.

True, what good is WP if you simply fly F everywhere anyway?

Bossreggie could answer that one.

BTW this article is a few months old now.

Actually this thread is old, whereas the new article I posted was new.

I guess the advantage of doing a FASA or status run, is if you did it at the start of your membership year when you have no status, is to enjoy the benefits of status for close to 2 years. However this completely irrelevant if your are Bossreggie.
