A quick follow up. I ended up paying the full number of points and tickets are booked. I did try to see if I could amend the post name (I agree now that the "Rip Off" heading is too harsh. Would have been at least more appropriate to add a question mark afterwards which is what I was trying to establish in my post. I am still stoked to be able to get 5 tickets on the one flight and very grateful to SQ for that availability. Thanks everyone for your feedback, it's helped me to calm down, realise that it was my own unfortunate fault to call back earlier and move on to looking forward to the holiday.
 
That's a nice followup - sorry you weren't able to quite sort to get predevaluation points, but as you say, their availability is very good - thanks for letting us know - and I'm glad you're looking forward to the holiday!
