I am flying SYD SIN EWR on SQ. If I book MEL SYD on VA the same day, will they check my bag through to EWR in MEL? I am United Platinum/Star Alliance Gold and will have that FF number attached to both bookings. Website says their partnership “makes travel effortless” and “offers a world without parallel.” This experience would be strong indicators of these statements to me.

Generally, they won't check through unless on the same booking/ticket

What does my transfer in SYD look like if they won’t check me through? Collect bags and take public transport or a taxi to International?

Yes, the train under the airport in SYD is very quick. How much time have you allowed between flights?

Personally, if I ever have to reposition to catch an international flight, I always prefer to travel the night before and stay at an airport hotel, then take a leisurely stroll to check in the next morning/day.

My worst nightmare would be to have the domestic flight cancelled or delayed and miss the international leg without any recourse for them needing to rebook me.
