Singapore Airlines loss

$7b in cash/cash equivalents is handy. $300m/month burn rate, not so much.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has completed sale-and-leaseback transactions for 11 aircraft, comprising seven Airbus A350-900s and four Boeing 787-10s, raising approximately S$2.0 billion in total:

SQ's convertible bonds and existing cash reserves should cover its financial needs into 2023:

That might help reduce losses but I don't see either of these being money makers.

That's right, and despite record cargo load factors, I gather cargo yields have softened since their peak last year. I understand the SQ Group's cash burn is currently around $100m per month.

We're very lucky here in Australia that SQ and QR have continued to operate throughout the pandemic. This has kept many of our fresh produce exporters going and it's also worth remembering that it is SQ Cargo who is carrying the lion's share of vaccine imports into the country. All of my friends and family who have needed to be repatriated have also done so on SQ, without a hitch so far.

Continuing to operate in the way they have has been very, very expensive for Temasek, we should be thankful that the Singapore Government has effectively bank rolled much of Australia's exports, facilitated the importation of vaccines and repatriated a majority of our citizens with almost no cost to the Australian tax payer. That's worth remembering.

Agreed. I gather they've also crunched the numbers and determined restarting a full operation rhat includes reactivating (a larger pool) of mothballed aircraft, retraining/upskilling more grounded staff would be even more expensive.

Don't forget as well Singapore needed to keep supply lines to the city state going as well. Lot of food (particularly dairy, beef, lamb etc) comes from Australia, although not sure how much of it comes off a boat vs plane.

Several times a week, SQ still flies into ADL, and out again a few hours later.
I am sure that a lot of freight is carried out of Aust, while those Aussies overseas who want to return due to covid, will be taking the seats available coming into ADL, and then quarantining in those "medi hotels".
They might export things by ship from Port Adelaide, but it would not be meat or seafood, probably more things like wheat.
Don't think that Singapore does importing of lifestock for "doing them in" on the island, that would be more so Indonesia, as we know them as "life exports".
OT: apart from SQ, only QR does the other international flight still coming in, CX and EK have stopped ADL flights.
Edit: KF points now extended again, so all is not "lost".

I think Emirates has done something similar giving a few months as bonus for staff. Some companies here can’t even give staff a 1-3% pay rise, my own job included (top asx profit machine also)
