I will be in Singapore for 2 nights in Jan, and would appreciate some advice on where to stay.

I'm there to have a quick stopover and a look around.

Ideally, somewhere central and not too expensive.

Thanks

I have stayed at the Hilton on Orchard Road and paid ~SGD190/night including +++.

They have promotional rates again but not sure if it includes January.

I've stayed at the Royal Plaza on Scotts - great location right in the middle of the hubub. It was showing its age (similar to say the Parmelia Hilton in PER) so the tariff was reasonable, but they are progressively rennovating floors and the rooms I have stayed in were good. They have free mini-bar and broadband, and a nice club room on the top floor. You can earn QFF points there too.

I just checked their website (Singapore Hotels: Royal Plaza On Scotts.....What Can We Do For You) and it says they are currently closed for rennovation but opening again in January 2007 and taking reservations now.

Right across the road is the Grand Hyatt - very nice but pricey, and a few doors down on the corner of Orchard and Scotts is the Marriott, also very nice. All in very central locations.

Its been a while since I've stayed in SIN anywhere other than Conrad (preferred) or Hilton. Prices for both seems to be going up significantly each year, but sometimes there are bargains (120+++ for Conrad).

Prices are highest when major events are on (obviously).

I second Royal Plaza on Scotts if you are wanting to stay somewhere cheap/reasonable price. It is a great location with free minibar and free broadband (save even more).

Goto a discount booking site like Hotel Reservations. Discount Hotels Worldwide for the discount price.

There are a couple nice smaller hotels in Little India. My wife was more or less satisfied with Perak Lodge which is about $SG110 double. And a few meters closer to the airport than Orchard Road.

But then I have problems spending $$ only to be asleep and not enjoy the benefits....

Happy wandering

Fred

I have recently stayed at the Rendezvous Hotel at the bottom of Orchard Rd opposite a MRT station, often rooms are around $100SGD and locaiton is central with an easy walk to Raffles or Sim Lim and one MRT stop from Orchard Rd. It is also opposite a food mall which is good value for local food.

I always stay at the Marriott on the cnr of Orchard Rd & Scotts Rd. The Marriott does great buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners. I'll be there again next Tuesday & Wednesday.

It's right next to Tangs Department store. There's an MRT station right at the door and it's fun to sit at the outside bar and watch everyone going past. There's an AMEX foreign exchange booth right outside the hotel and downstairs you'll find loads of ATMs.

If you're only there for a couple of days one thing that you really ought to try and do is the nite zoo tour, it's really something.

Anyway, to check accommodation in Singapore, take a look at Reviews of vacations, hotels, resorts, vacation and travel packages - TripAdvisor and see what people are saying about the various hotels there.
