SIN & New liquid rules

We made use of this yesterday and it does work well - for perfumes and alcohol. The airport has information brouchures and signs up, and the retailers are all asking if you are going to Australia.

However, I really wonder if the security is as bad as it seems - We picked up our alcohol off the shelf and carried it to the checkout after walking around with it for a while. That bottle was then placed in the sealed bag for us. While I didn't check, i'm assuming that the same bottle that went into the bag stayed in there and hence there's the possibility that someone could substitute their own bottle of illegal stuff before purchase. The same thing happened with the purfume.

That said, it was nice to not have to carry 4 litres of alcohol around the airport - even if they get rid of the rules, they can keep the nice gate delivery service.

Travelled through Singapore on Sunday night. Bit of a hassle, bit of a delay - duty free goods have to be re-packed. Also you now have to compete with duty free staff queing up to feed bags through X-Ray machine before you can get to departure gate.

Don't forget that SYD has a dedicated duty free immigration queue and arriving from AKL in February I was the only one in the queue. Straight through and then had to wait an eternity for my priority luggage to come out onto the carousel.

Reckon JohnK got lucky here. Mostly I find that you are better off taking your chances outside of the Downtown queue.

Most of my travel goes via SIN. On balance I will continue to stock up on the grog in Singapore - better prices, plus it make sense to get it over and done with while waiting for the connecting flight. Hopefully I can get off quick smart in Sydney and get to the front of the queue for immigration.

For a non-Oz national the duty free queue at Sydney is definitely a bonus - but it just accelerates my wait for luggage

I came through SIN yesterday and bought duty free cosmetics. Because the items were all less than 100ml, I was allowed to put them and the receipt into my own ziplock bag and carry them myself through security.

It is apparently only purchases over 100ml that need to be collected in the departure "lounge" after security.
