Has anyone passed through SIN with the new liquid rules in place? I'd like to know how its changed the purchases of duty free alcohol over there. My understanding is you can't carry liquids (greater than 100ml etc etc) past the security checkpoint. Well seeing in SIN the duty free stores are after immigration, however before the checkpoints, have they come up with a way to deal with this?

I'd like to get my duty free alcohol there as it's cheap!

I guess I will find out tomorrow. It is possible for the DF shops to seal the contents in a bag with the receipt attached, but whether or not the SIN shops and security procedures are able to cope with that at this early stage of the new policy is yet to be seen. I will be making very specific enquiries and observations before making any purchases/

I hope there aren't any changes as I would like to get some duty free in 2 nights time and again when returning on 19 April.

If worse comes to worse I will have to buy some duty free when arriving in BKK in 2 nights time and then in BNE when returning from overseas.

I have seen atleast one shop sealing big clear seethrough bags with the heat sealer thing and receipt attached.
Be interesting to see how it works of course its usually ok as SIN is the last stop on the way home for most so no issues once you get to Oz and move to a domestic flight to get to your final destinations.....

But, Significant other was warned about it on her HKG-ADL-MEL trip as the ADL-MEL was an international flight and they warned about the issue of correct procedure to be followed. (This was 2 days before changes though, so just warning people)

I haven't yet been through SIN since the change (another week away), but my understanding is the duty free bag will be sealed. I am not sure if it is like US in having delivered to gate for you to collect or like NZ where you take it through gate security yourself. If you open it before screening then you wont be able to take it.

According to the dotars site. duty free needs to be delivered to the gate

You may carry duty free liquid, aerosol and gel purchases on board if they are delivered to the departure gate in a sealed bag with proof of purchase and collected after you have proceeded through security screening.

How Singapore is handling it will be interesting to know

But in the case of NZ airports, the airside part of duty free shops is beyond security. In fact the wording isn't that different to the generic duty free wording - eg if you buy at a downtown duty free shop you have to collect it airside.

As for SIN, I won't be finding out myself anytime soon. My next times through SIN I have further onward flights thus unable to purchase duty free liquids (unless I am prepared to go through the hassle of immigration at next airport, collect bags, put duty free in bag, recheck bags, back through immigration). No thanks.

True. but the wording does specifically state that they must be delivered to the departure gate

Went through SIN on Sunday everning (1/4/7). Dutyfree was sealed in clear plastic bag at point of purchase. Staff at the store asked if I was transferring on after my QF78 (which i wasn't).... there seemed to be no issues with my duty free packaged like this.

Just to be specific, did you carry the sealed bag to the departure gate security checking or was it delivered to you in the departure lounge after you had gone thru security?

Sure...I carried the sealed bag from the shop through security checking and onto the plane without any problems...

Haven't the rules changed in Oz now such that you can'tcarry any liquids through security - similar to US/Eur? I thought that changed on 31/3? So if you connect from Int'l to dom in Oz you lose your DF liquids?

I think those rules only apply to Int'l flights at the moment, so if connecting to domestic Oz flights, going through domestic security it shouldn't matter.

Why bother for a few measly dollars?

How much did your airfare cost?

Sample scenario: Traveller Bob wants a bottle of JW Blue, and is flying LHR-SIN-SYD. He can either:
1) Pay ~$140 and pick it up during his 45min stopover in SIN, then proceed straight to immigration/customs when he lands at SYD, or;
2) Pay ~$170 and buy it at SYD (queueing up with everyone else buying DF), then end up at the back of the immigration queue.

Personally, I'd save the $30 and excess time, and buy my DF at SIN (but hey, that's just me).

Cheers,
- Febs.

Agree with the savings that can be on offer in SIN.

Don't forget that SYD has a dedicated duty free immigration queue and arriving from AKL in February I was the only one in the queue. Straight through and then had to wait an eternity for my priority luggage to come out onto the carousel.

I am sitting in the SIN FLounge right now and can confirm the news from the QF staff here is that the DF shops here will deliver your purchases to the aircraft for collection after you have passed through the liquids security screening.

I will be availing myself of this service very shortly.

Depends on the time I guess...last time I saw that queue it was longer than all the others!
...and I didn't really see anything stopping anyone from using it, rather than just DF shoppers.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Well it certainly worked well. Note that DF purchases must be completed at least 1 hour before boarding time so they can be delivered to the gate for scanning.

The purchases are placed in a large clear sealed bag and a copy of you receipt is taped inside the bag with you seat number written on the top.
