Oh dear.. What were the gripes?
TBH I frequent the SQ lounge in BNE often, & though not the largest, & not the most modern decor, it is IMO a lovely homely lounge, with just adequate food & drink offerings, & pleasant friendly service from long term lounge angels, where they get to know you & nothing is ever a bother. The best attribute is that it is rarely busy, as we only have J class out of BNE on 333, * 3 per day & a pleasant & friendly smattering of regular flyers on the BNE/SIN sectors.
Would like to hear your comparative values on your next flight sector.
Wish you a pleasant flight. :)
Cheers,
jl

Hi I totally agree with you. I once visited the SQ lounge at BNE (albeit briefly since arriving late) and found it compact but cosy enough and as you rightly pointed all t flights out of BNE are 333s, wasn't crowded at all. In fact the staff were very pleasant and even though i arrived late almost in time to board, the staff instead of pushing me to go to the gate advised me to relax until the final call was given. I find the SQ lounge at MEL to be too small and crowded most of the time (never been to t F section though). The SKL at terminal 3 SIN is a whole different experience altogether. I am planning to drop by at SYD lounge just for comparision.
Cheers

Prince William & Kate were well accommodated at the SQ lounge in BNE during their short transit recently, though not the most enchanting outlook, but guess the cosiness would keep the Paparazzi at bay.. as compared to the balcony QP @ BNE INT.

I have an upcoming trip on SQ SYD-SIN in J(redemption). I live in Melbourne and usually fly out of Melbourne internationally. So not used to SYD international terminal at all. After reading a few reviews here and elsewhere, I have decided to use the ANZ lounge instead of SQ's SKL for my trip. But maybe i'll check them both out just to compare since I have plenty of time (flying on SQ242 departing 1910 hrs and I will be at t terminal by 1430hrs).

The SQ J Lounge in SYD is a hole!!
Don't bother with it. Dirty, tatty old furniture, small, cramped, very ordinary F&B. The Koru Club is far better.

Well talk about polar extremes.

So the 777-300 SIN-MEL day flight;
Melbourne, the lounge sucks, as other pointed out, it was full, old furniture, poor food and bev. (only bonus was the cricket was on)
On Board:
The seats are not lie flat, which the same issues skybed mkI is a sure fire wedgiemaster 5000. - However as it was a day flight, this was not a big issue.
Waverley cough. - this is a term coined when as kids we used t go watch the AFL at waverly park and sit on aluminium bench seats for 5 hours. - thats the same feeling I had after being on this plane.
Book the cook; Meal was not heated up enough, had to send it back. - staff were very apologetic, but a cold meal, not good.
The entertainment system; the quality and quantity of progammes was very poor, given the need for a lot of chinese based content, the english content suffered (CX do to a degree as well)

The Return A380 the total opposite to the above with one issue.
Lounge in SIN, brilliant, again one of the best J lounges i have been in. (if not the best)
On Board;
What an amazing seat! its so wide the whle family could have joined me.
I was taking some pics and the cabin manager came up to me and asked if it was my first time, which I explained was my first time on a SQ 380. He invited me to come down to the first suites check them out and have a drink down there, amazing!
The seat folds down in a rather unusual way, but was very comfortable.
The seat again is very hard but no numb bum issues.
However my seat was broken, it would not recline or the footrest come out (buttons did nothing), so they moved me opposite to the centre seat (there was only 24 J pax on the whole flight!) and they made my original seat my bed, and i was free to flitter between the two as i pleased, i mealed and movied in one, slept in the other.
The crew was top notch, even though i had no SQ status (VA gold) they treated me very very well.
The book the cook was great, a lovely USDA steak, steak is tough to do well on a plane, but they did it very well.
Food and booze was great and plentiful.
The entertainment system is 2000% better on the 380 than the 777, There was easily more things that i wanted to watch than i had time available, at least on a par with Q Streaming if not slightly better.
One of two things that i didnt like was the highly reflective screen and how its not adjustable to the angle you would prefer.
The other is that the person behind you moves around or kicks your seat you feel it, on QF thats not the case.
very easy access to power and USB etc, unlike some J seats where you almost put your back out trying to find them on the lower front of the seats.

Two very different experiences, but as a QF guy, to my buddies at Qantas, your skybed MKII looks like a rusting mini moke on the front lawn of a mascot youth hostel compared to SQ's J seats.

ReLoad,
Thanks for reporting back.. I was interested.
Your explanation regarding the differences between the lounges which is quite evident.. & I agree. At the least SQ is being proactive in making improvements for SYD & MEL, obviously well overdue.
One consolation is that one has the option & luxury for the 380 service for SYD & MEL, & BNE is yet to aspire to..
As for the comparative values between the 777 & 380, I also agree there is a remarkable difference, & the 380 is somewhat far superior in many aspects of seat comfort, IFE & space, but mostly the 380 is much quieter IMO.
777s are a great airplane, though I certainly prefer the upgraded options in all classes for the 380s & 333s for SQ.
It is always the refinement of service that usually wins hands down - consistently for any SQ in flight product.. Whether you have valid elite status or not.
I found your post a welcoming & wholesome read.. Hope that you can be a part of many enjoyable future flight & travel experiences :D
Cheers,
jl

Might have had a "Tart Up" for the Prince and the other Princess

Sure the BNE SQ lounge must of had an appropriate 'tart up"...Presumably:

A picture portrait adorning the wall of Her Majesty.
A selection of Twinings tea fit for royalty - inclusive of the commemorative limited edition with 'Wills & Kate" picture embossed on the wrapper.
Laura Ashley & or Burberry soft furnishings adorning the lounge.
Omission of tabloid newspapers & magazines.
