Been looking at taking a 5 day break in Singapore flying CNS/SIN/CNS on Silk Air but gee Im seeing some very negative reviews like aircraft condition, food and service, I'm wondering why?

Ive always referred to Silk Air as SQ poorer cousin. The FAs are no where near as polished (but are any when compared to a SQ FA?) but they try and the food can be hit or miss. Worse meal Ive ever received (departing Manado, couldnt eat it) and one of the best meals Ive ever eaten (departing Chengdu) was Silk Air.

Similar experience to myself. Can be hit or miss with the food. The staff are really polite and try to do their best but just aren’t quite as polished as Denali stated.
We had a terrible meal departing DAD last time but used them between CNX-SIN a couple of times and the food was great. Just a pity that CNX was one of the routes that got cut and was handed over to TR

Best way to think of them is comparable to QF domestic 737 operations. They are SQ's equivalent of "domestic" operations, although pushed to the limit with CNS and HIJ routes.

I echo above, catering ex-SIN tends to be consistent, although on the small side in terms of quantity, but ex-out stations good, bad and everywhere in between. Not sure about CNS.

It is BYO in flight entertainment. They do have streaming service (SilkAir Studio) for content to your own device (such as laptop, tablet or phone). IIRC you need to download SilkAir Studio app beforehand to apple drive products, but for laptops users it streams to your browser and android users can download app on board.

Seats are obviously 3-3, according to SeatGuru 30" pitch, but not sure about the accuracy of that. I've found them more comfortable than say a QF 737 which is also supposedly 30" pitch.

The brand is supposed to disappear in 2020, with routes replaced by Scoot (already well underway) or Singapore Airlines narrow bodies. I suspect the 737 MAX 8 woes may be delaying the changeover. And to be honest, I would not be surprised if the CNS route was replaced by a Scoot 787.

IMHO, still better than turning a 6-7 hr journey into a 11-12 hr one.

I do wonder how it will reflect on SIA's brand once the integration is complete. i've noticed the well worn aircraft in the past but expectations are as such given it was SilkAir branded - will they go to the expense of sharpening things up or will they rely on people recognising the regional routes as having a different level of hard and soft product?

Regardless, my experiences of SilkAir have always been perfectly acceptable for what it was - a reasonably priced regional carrier.

Cabin upgrades were slated for this year. SilkAir To Undergo Major Cabin Product Upgrade And Be Merged Into SIA

Largely, that was contingent on having moved a large portion of the fleet to the MAX, so not sure what the current plans/timelines are

Hmm, concerned now. Was about to book DAD-SIN for April as flight times were better than Jetstar, and really like earning KrisFlyer points.
So maybe eat first? As long as we and our bags get to SIN on time and together I’ll be happy enough.

We may have just got a poor one last time, who knows. As I said we have flown with them a couple of times CNX-SIN and the food was excellent. The lounge at DAD, think it was the Orchid lounge? had a small collection of food and most of the offerings were quite nice and tasty. The seats on the 737 were very comfortable in J and the staff tried their best to get the beverages and meals out ASAP but seemed a little disorganised. I’d have no hesitation flying with them again on the same route or any other regional route.

We flew SIN-DPS-SIN in J on Silk Air. FAs were great on both flights, food was fine ex SIN and ok ex DPS. Seats were comfortable enough. We would fly them again for a short flight.

We have flown MI SIN-USM in J a couple of times.

Short flights so didn't worry about the BYO entertainment but they did have some tablets you could use. The meals were pretty good.

Definitely better than QF 737 J but not as polished as SQ.

Even looking at the Y cabin I would happily fly them again.
