Should I stay or should I go - Hong Kong [protests]

Arrived into Hong Kong last night and caught a taxi to Causeway Bay where my hotel is. My hotel was about a block from where this protest was and you wouldn’t even know it was going on. A mate of mine even caught the MTR into close where the protest was with no problem. Activity in the streets was normal one block back from the protests. As we have been advised by our people on the ground providing security for us, the protests are VERY localised. You just monitor the south china morning post website and go about your normal day.

NYE Fireworks Cancelled due to signficant drop in tourist numbers

We’ve got a 2 day stopover in Honkers coming up. The kids want to visit Disney.

I wonder if the drop in tourists presents an opportunity to visit HK Disneyland without the usual queues?

Reckon we have been to HK Disneyland about half a dozen times and the queues have never been huge. The first time we went it had only been open a few weeks and the queues were pretty good.

From what i understand HK Disney already has the quickest queues of any Disney Park. I guess it depends mostly on how the downturn is affecting tourism from mainland China as I understand they are the largest % of visitors.

A friend told me to go to Ocean Park in morning and leave by 4pm, as 4pm is when bulk of mainland tourists arrive on masse - not sure if same applies for Disney as it isnt on my lost of places to visit.

When we visited HK Disney, the only place with a queue was for the "Iron Man Experience". At a 15 minute wait it was hardly excessive (and besides, it was so worth it :) )

Ironically, several times when we walked past the "5 minutes wait from here" signs, it took about 5 minutes to actually walk the distance through the serpentine to get to the ride itself.

So yeah, I wouldn't worry about the usual queues.

Also don't forget to download the Disney app, it had real time waiting time for all the rides.

Thanks to the several who provided experiences on the HK disney crowds (or lack thereof).

Background to my enquiry, is that HKG on this trip is just a staging port to pick up award seats on to Europe that were booked almost a year ago. We have about a day and a half layover after the positioning flight from Syd. Booked all this before the "troubles" started.

Originally booked accomodation downtown, but this was fully flex, so cancelled that, and now staying near the Airport just to minimise hassles.

We're not big Disney fans by any means, but since it's nearby the airport, I figured our layover day would be a good opportunity to visit with low crowd levels.

Thankfully in July we are just transiting. Also award flights. HK will likely be fine but now we are concerned about our arrival into Paris!

We're off to Paris in July too, what's happening there?
I'll be in HK for work in May for couple of days

Grrrr. We were due to be in transit in Hong Kong only arriving from Adelaide then on to Europe. Cathay just cancelled our onward flight to Europe and rebooking us on one 18 frigging hours later! Not happy Jan. Do not want to Hong Kong and stay. Qantas trying to change flight from Adelaide. Used the message feature on the Qantas app as requested and it was as useless as a fork to cut steak and told them that.

Is this for your July trip ?

Im in Hong Kong at the moment, spent Thur and Fri in Central area and The Peak, no trouble city relatively quiet. I went to Lantau island today, again short queues for cable cars and boat trips. Thinking of heading to TST tonight to watch the light show, guide at Buddest temple said next lot of protects expected to be on NYE.

Good that it’s settling a little. I just don’t want to exit and re enter this July.

I have taken a chance and am having a stopover next Nov. I want to go to Hong Kong Disney lol
It is part of a rewards flight .
I took mum there a few years ago. Her only chance of experiencing Disneyland. It was cute and she had a great time. As she was 82 I popped her into a wheelchair so she could enjoy it all without needing to stop all the time. She wouldn’t have been able to see much otherwise as she was getting frail. Best move ever.

I'm heading to Hong Kong in late Feb. Booked my flights before the protests started. Looks like it should be ok to spend a few days there from what the latest posts in this thread are implying.
