News just being reported on Flyer Talk.

Owners of Sheraton Perth will be rebranding it as a Pan Pacific.
Looks like this will happen in January 2011.

Very disappointing for SPG members.

Now Starwood will not have a presence in Adelaide, Brisbane, and Perth; and insufficient rooms in Melbourne.

WOW, very glad I left SPG when Brisbane turned into a Sofitel, I dont expect the Port Douglas and Gold Coast Properties will last either.

They are not doing well in Australia.I have now stayed in as many Aussie SPG hotels that have rebadged as those still operating.
Perth
Brisbane
Hobart
Darwin
Alice Springs
Uluru(Ayers Rock as it was then).

Add
W Sydney (now Blue Sydney) and
Aloft Sydney Airport (announced but I believe became the Quest Mascot)

and yet they are expanding massively in Asia and the US (3 opening in NY in next 6 months)

Must say though that apart from the newish low-floor club rooms, rest of Sheraton Perth was pretty tired.

Also the only hotel in Aus where I have got a 'mistake' rate.
Got a $24/night rate for 2 nights, used in conjunction with Amex Plat flight to see a Swans game in Perth.

Never stayed at the W but I had forgotten the Sheraton Sydney Airport.

What about the PMQ Four Points which is now Rydges??? And dont forget the Sheraton Breakwater in TSV now jupiters.

What is the hierarchy of the Pan Pacific Hotel Group? I see the Crowne Plazas in Parramatta and at Darling Harbour will be rebranded Parkroyals but the Sheraton Perth will become the Pan Pacific. I'm just wondering what's their top level and where to from there.

What are you referring to , the Crowne Plazas in Para and Darling harbour were Parkroyals, they are not becoming Parkroyals, just like the HI Airport etc etc

Okay, I'm confused. So there is just one Parkroyal brand? Unlike Hyatt, for example, that has Hyatt, Andaz, Summerfield Suites and Place. Where does the Pan Pacific hotel brand fit in, or is it apples and oranges?

Parkroyal/Centra and Travelodge were brands managed by South Pacific Hotel Group and sold to Bass Hotels which is now ICHG, the Parkroyals overseas had different ownership.

"The company will initially launch with three hotels.
The Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour and Crowne Plaza Parramatta will be rebranded Parkroyal Darling Harbour and Parkroyal Parramatta, while the Sheraton Perth will become the Pan Pacific Perth."

Looks like two ICH brand hotels are going as well......

Interesting, so what was old is now new ;). I was never a big fan of either CP's when they were Parkroyals, or CP's, I suppose using the Parkroyal branding will help with recognition. IHG have enough Sydney properties to handle loosing the two CP's, far less of an impact than the loss of the Perth Sheraton from SPG methinks. Thanks for posting the story, it was a tad confusing to here that they were becoming parkroyals given their origin.

It certainly is confusing - there is a traffic sign in Canberra CBD showing "Parkroyal Hotel"... the Crowne Plaza overlay has recently come off.... maybe it knows something we dont! ;)

....

Yes I used to stay there weekly and the other floors were more than tired they were bad. Showers that barely worked, a/c that didn't work and the smell was not too good either.

Sad to see it go though as the exec floors were great and the exec lounge was huge with good views.

Well that's quite surprising, as the Sherton is up there with the Hilton as one of the longer-term properties staying under the same badge if my memory serves me correctly.

Also interesting, as it wasn't that many years ago the Sheraton underwent major renovations. The last lot did up some of the floors, and converted the former office accommodation into guest rooms.

The last time I think a property swapped names was the Grand Chancellor which went into the Mirvac portfolio a few years back, and Observation City when it left Raddison even further back.

Shame that SPG will lose representation in PER, but we still have the Hilton, Hyatt and IC to keep us suitably rested.

The Chifley became the Somerset.

Shame about the rebadging, - though I do hope the restaurant stays. I rather liked it.

Really, though, Perth could do with an extra couple of hotels, not just rebadging.
