I agree. The 12 day rule was quite clear.
Would beg to differ, the restriction is on buying/gifting/sharing not being gifted/shared to (i.e. being a receiver). There are reports on FT on successfully receiving and indeed since the US have themselves tweated that an account less than 12 days can be shared to.

THe receiver of the tweat has also confirm this worked Ok for him.

Having said that clearly experiences differ.

Noob question :
I have an account with zero miles (set up a couple of months ago). Can I set up a new family member account now, buy myself 50K miles and then transfer that to new family members account getting 100K total or will it be invalid as their account hasn't been open for 12 days ?

Now isn't really the time to be buying miles at full price as that would negate most of the benefit anyway, are you just after giving the other person 100k miles, probably would be best to find someone who already has 50,000 and would share to you giving you 100k and then you return the 50k (but that would only leave you with 50k)... Unfortunately at this point i think this new account of yours will not make the 12 day rule...

Although Burman begs to differ...

Actually what I was begging to differ on was the statement that "the rule was clear" given the possibility for interpretation, peoples experience and US's twitter. Given the potential for failure I would not be creating an account now other than purely speculatively.

A question to confirm my understanding - I have just shared 50K miles to hubby's account, and his 25K miles back to my account. The new miles are 100K for hubby's and 150K for mine. Now I would like to share 50K miles to my nephew's account (he has opened a USDM account on 3rd October). My question is that I should be able to do this (ie share 50K miles to 2 different accounts) - correct? So my nephew will have 100K in his new account, and I will have 100K balance in my account. He lives in Canada, and I would like him to visit me in the UK.

Well, I dunno, I reckon the rule IS crystal clear.

From the US airways website sharing miles page: "...please note that Dividend Miles accounts less than 12 days old are not permitted to Buy, Share or Gift miles. For Gift and Share transactions, the recipient account must also be 12 days old..."

I can't see how this leaves much room for creative interpretation.

Now, whether or not US chooses to universally apply this rule is a completely different thing, but with it written this clearly I don't think anyone should feel at all aggrieved if they have a transaction to a new account knocked back, despite anecdotal reports of success.

Yes you can also share to your nephew, he might be nudging very close to the 12 day rule though.

i tried sharing to an account less then 12 days old and got rejected twice.. i called them and they confirmed this is the reason why

So the only advantage if sharing is if there us no 100% bonus buy offer???

Since sharing is cheaper than buying, generating bonus points (and thus cheaper points) through sharing is preferable.

The only catch is that when you have a share promo, you need some points to start with. With a buy or gift promo you can start from scratch.

You could probably buy some points at the full price during a share promo then share them to create more points with bonus, and you'll likely still come out ahead. Probably even more so if you start small and keep bouncing the share between accounts (but the catch on this is the time taken between completing share transactions). I haven't done the economics but I think it's been mentioned a couple of times.

Some people have also taken advantage of share promos by using someone else with points as a "seed".

Thanks, Alanslegal, for your reply. So, if I try to share 50K to my nephew on 15 October and if his account does not make the 12 day rule then my share will not go through. This has been mentioned in one of the posts.

The bit open to interpretation was that the bit about "For Gift and Share transactions, the recipient account must also be 12 days old." was not there at the start of the promo, they have obviously added because of people asking just this question.

Oh, and anticipating someone will doubt, this check this link out, loyalty lobby cut and pasted the rules.

I guess maybe US Airways thought it wasn't that clear too!

Ah! Ok I agree it wasn't clear. But now it is. Very cunning rule change.

Just tried to do my final share - log into the website - went to the share and this message came up

"Sorry. This site is temporarily unavailable while we perform routine maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience. We should be available inside of a couple of hours. Please try us again."

Now the wait and constant log ins to see when it comes back on today..........

Ok. So I have now got 50000 in my account and 60000 in my wifes (purchased 10000 up front to get all the transfers done in time). Final purchased cost of the miles is US 1.43cpm and about 1.52 AUD. So pretty good considering I had none to begin with. Thanks to everyone on this thread.

Question: If I want to redeem South Pacific - USA in J for 110,000 am I able to do this somehow with the points in separate accounts?
Thanks

I just learned about this whole process this morning and have since come up with my itinerary and am creating an account with US Airways as we speak.

Problem is, this special requires (as noted earlier in the thread) an account active for 12 days, which I don't have. I can't also see any other deals on at the moment.

Since I'll be flying in November, I really need to book asap. Their site seems down so I can't get a figure on how much a point costs full price, does anyone have an amount? From what I can note it costs 100,000 points to fly business class from Australia to Europe, so simply multiplying that amount should give me the figure I'll be quoted when I call them up - right?

You won't be able to participate in this promotion. You can buy points at a rate of (from memory) 3.6c/pt but there would be more attractive ways of getting affordable *A tickets (consider Avianca LifeMiles) than simply buying the points in one block.

Others will have more expertise than I, but thought I would jump in with that info.

I don't really understand the last part of your question. But business class Australia to Europe return is 120k miles.

Standard miles cost is 35USD +7.5% tax per 1000 miles.

No. You will need 110k in one account.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I will have to wait till the next buy or share promo comes up. How often do they come up? Some threads have been saying they have been coming up more regularly?
Though I will still be able to do some sweet South Pacific intrazone redemptions in J with this many miles...
Cheers

Our original 10,000 purchased came to US 3.76cpm (AUD 4 cpm). This would reduce to US 3.6 cpm (I think) if you bought a 50,000 lot.
