Anyone else a member here? any good?

I'm having to jump ship from the sofitel to staying at the shangra-la - I've just signed up for the freebie membership atm but should level up by the end of next month and platinum by july...
I will only be staying at the one in sydney so will be interesting to see what its like.

I'm a member but only because Centurion gave me a free membership. I think I'm at the Jade level which is the middle one? Anyway it's almost pointless for me - I live within about 5 minutes of the Shangri-La in Sydney so I'm unlikely to ever stay there and I've never really been interested in this brand overseas. However I do make the odd trip to visit family in North Queensland so I've had two stays at the Shangri-La in Cairns in the last year or so. It's probably the nicest hotel in Cairns. I think the Jade level allows you to check in at the lounge but I always book a lounge/club suite anyway.

Interesting... apparantly the top tier you get free lounge access which is handy ;)

IMHO totally useless program - I was Diamond after staying 50+ nts a year at China World Hotel in PEK - room upgrade offers virtually non existent - yes got free brekky with every stay - but he'll Sino Hotel Guide or several others could also get brekky thrown in with bookings - I no longer stay at CWH in PEK as they were just not prepared to give anything.

But I must add I have no exp outside PEK

Hi roj, et al...

We reside at Shangri-La properties wherever we can when we travel - Shangri-La, Traders & Kerry - and greatly value our Golden Circle membership.

The three tier levels are Gold, Jade & Diamond and, apart from the benefits each tier brings, for every USD 1 spent at the hotel on accommodation, food & beverage, and miscellaneous (spa, leisure, business centre charges, etc.,) members are awarded 1 point (gold), 1.25 (jade) and, 1.5 (diamond).

Award Points may be redeemed in a number of ways: Accommodation, Room Up-grade and, Non-Room redemptions such as... Food & Beverage or, Spa Vouches and, Points to Miles... we generally redeem some of our points at each 'stay' and enjoy a delicious meal in one of the hotel's premier restaurants by exchanging 1000 points for a Food & Beverage Voucher that is equivalent to USD 100 and simply pay in cash or CC for the balance - for which, of course, we earn more points; and convert any remaining to miles near expiration time.

We maintain our Jade tier each year with either 20 qualifying nights or 10 qualifying stays, but also endeavour to attain Diamond when only a few nights short of the necessary 50 by doing a 'points run' either to Sydney or Cairns as the recognition received at that tier level is pure magic and follows on until the end of the next year.

For further information visit their website at shangri-la.com

Naturally, we can't stay at a Shangri-La property everywhere we travel so we keep-up our memberships at SPG & LeClub as well.

Cheers

I adore the S-L properties, from the costumes of the staff to the deluxe style of their rooms. Where money is no object S-L is my preferred choice.

I like most of properties under the group ( The Shang and Traders). It s a big brand in mainly north Asia and South East Asia. The loyalty program went through a change last year and from my experience the new program is actually quite good. The only downside is that most of their properties are in the above mentioned region which is fantastic if thats where you travel.

There is one in Cairns, but lets face it, its a former Radisson!

Does anyone know if Shangri-La Golden Circle recognise 3rd party bookings? I have found a very good price on the Traders hotel in Rangoon (Yangon) which I can only access on a third party booking site. Will I earn any GC points or Frequent Flyer miles on this booking? (not worried about status as I'll never make Jade level)

No they didn't for me. I booked a rate last year on Agoda for Traders in KUL and they wouldn't honour anything

My impression was that if you can afford to get to a high level you can probably afford to book a club room anyway. A bowl of fruit is nice but they have provided that in the Shangri-Las for me anyway, although I think you get to CHOOSE your fruit on the second tier of GC.

The email newsletter is quite nice for what it's worth.

I stay at the SL Sydney most weeks, they are fantastic. The rooms are gorgeous, the staff are lovely and the welcome gifts appreciated in my office! We've used the points for stays at the SL KUL, SL Borocay and next year we're visiting the SL Paris which looks amazing. The points are great earning rate, I find the best value redemption is food and beverage or spa vouchers... The CHI spa in Sydney is lovely
