Much to my astonishment, this invite sold within a few minutes of being listed. $25 on the "Buy-it-now" price, and I had thought this to be rather optimistic.

Yeah amazing isn't it! At some stage I'll throw myself on Ebay offering the lucky winner free entry to a Qantas Club of their choice. Hell, if they're female and cute, I'll give them my "Partner Gold" :D

You probably could have got $30-$50 for it. Still, quite a good deal for something you paid nothing for (bar the sweat, tears and dodgy airline food!)

This is the same person that was trying to sell the same things last week or the week before.

She has not been able to sell anything so far. The passes seem useless even the complimentary invitation as there is no expiry date.

I have a feeling the seller or the bidders will be receiving an e-mail shortly.

I've emailed the seller a few days ago, but she has yet to respond. Clearly she is knowingly selling an item that is invalid.
Let's spam her.... :D

The whole situation has me beat?

When these 'guest passes' WERE still in use, I tried my luck on Ebay...

(confession)

I was only expecting a max of $2.00 each, however, Ebay sent me a 'warning', stating, that my listing was discontinued and that if I "reoffend", then I will be "banned for life"!!!!

They claimed, it breached some sought of 'copyright' or something to do with 'branded names', eg. QANTAS.

(I used to sell my excess ones OK on the old SOLD.com site, before it got closed down, due to 'dodgy trading' practises!)

regards,

Qantas used to monitor eBay (and I assume other similar sites) watching for people breaking the terms and conditions of their Qantas FF/Club membership. I don't know for sure, but expect the guest passs were "officially" not transferable and would expect that selling them for profit would be against the Qantas membership terms and conditions. So perhaps Qantas complained to eBay and they were just following up the complaint.

Quote from the back of an old Qantas Club Member's Guest Pass:
This guest pass is not transferable and remains the property of Qantas Airways Limited ...
So you would actually be selling something that is the property of Qantas Airways Limited, which I assume is not permitted.

This sounds like a real productive use of some staffer's time. These things only come up rarely.

What bugs me is people selling safety cards from airliners. Presumably they souvenir them from the seat pocket.

I make a point of reading them when I settle in. Sure, I might know most of the stuff already, and I've watched that demonstration a zillion times, but I like to refresh my memory, make sure I've got a lifejacket, check where the nearest exit is. And, as they point out, the aircraft might be subtly different. Especially when I'm flying on a different airline.

When something goes wrong, it is probably going to go wrong fast, and it could be on takeoff, and I'll have no time in a smoke-filled cabin to go reading safety cards or to count how many rows between me and the exit.

So I want that card available in the seat pocket for me to read and not on eBay.

I agree with your though regarding people walking off the aircraft with these cards. Some become collectors items when an old aircraft ceases service and I expect some of them hit the market at this time. But I would never support the sale of safety cards as it does promote the theft of an important safety item from on-board operational aircraft.
