We are flying BKK-SYD in early November in whY (not full whY either). I have requested an upgrade to J and, failing that, an upgrade to Premium Economy (W or T?).

Anyway...

What seat class should I be watching on Seatcounter to indicate availability? Previously when travelling in D and wanting an upgrade to A it was very clear to me. Now I'm not so sure...

Any I availability can indicate a reasonable chance.

High D is a good indicator as well.

Low J means reduced chances, but I have secured upgrade for myself and SWMBO (from L class) SYD-JFK after QF107 was showing J4 D0 I0.

YMMV

Thanks serfty. So am I to assume from your reply that there is actually no way to really get a handle on your chances of an economy to business/premium economy upgrade using Seatcounter unlike, say, going from D to A as part of a DONEx where it seems that the numbers bear a more than passing resemblance to the eventual result?

Actually, it's similar.

High A indicates better chances of Business to First upgrades, just like the High D I mentioned.

Also, if you can look at E/F or KVS seatmaps, then very few seats showing allocated in J/W can indicate higher chances.

One more thing - low availability in high coach fare classes (Y B H) can also indicate better upgrade chances.

OK thanks again. I'm still not quite getting something though. It seems as though you are saying my whY to potential J upgrade will book into D class? What class will my whY to potential Y+ upgrade book into? I know that Y+ is either W or T - so should I be looking at one of those as the eventual booking class? I had this feeling that upgrades were treated differently...

Your whY to J would book into U ...
