It's the man we all love to hate.... MOL:

Ryanair CEO: 'Seatbelts on planes are pointless'

Seatbelts on planes are pointless and will not save passengers in a crash, the chief executive of Ryanair has said.

“Seatbelts don't matter,” Michael O’Leary told The Telegraph. “If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seatbelt won’t save you."

The chief executive of the budget Irish airline claimed legislation forcing passengers to wear seatbelts is unnecessary and wants to introduce "standing room only" sections on flights.

I'm all for trying new things, but I really can't see this one happening.

I'm surprised that this article got out without so much as a single opinion sought from any other authority except for MOL. Talk about ethical journalism   . No one even bothered to ask or comment on turbulence?

I know there aren't seatbelts for bullet trains, but.....

MOL did make reference to turbulence though, highlighting the fact that Ryanair's European routes and altitude are rarely if ever affected by turbulence!

I can't ever see them changing this rule in a hurry. MOL can cough on all he likes about they don't have turbulence, they don't have hard landings etc. This issue is that they are accounting for the one you aren't expecting to happen! Just adds another reason why I won't fly with Ryanair!

Michael O'Leary is welcome to take his seatbelt off when the plane is involved in a collision with another taxiying aircraft or a ground support vehicle/ rogue aerobridge....

Maybe they could take out the emergency slides and rafts too while they are at it? After all - why bother having them if everyone is dead anyway....

Personally I keep mine on, when the crew tell us to...

QF72. Didn't a lot of the injuries come from pax not wearing seat belts?

They do serve a purpose.

I think they should give him his standing-room-only-sans-seatbelt planes and transfer all liability to him, see what happens. I'm sure it'll only take one incidence of turbulence for the airline to face a hefty lawsuit. Problem solved.

OT I would expect to see a large plane order from FR within the next 12 months.

Somewhere between 100 - 200 planes!

i doubt the poor souls on QF72 would agree.....MOL in tw@t-mode as usual

They really should reword the headline to "Ryanair: Pointless"

Why on earth do people waste time printing this garbage (although it is nonews).

NoNews got it from The Telegraph (UK presumably) who obtained the quote from a press conference.

So not sure who should be lined up first in the shooting range for publishing the word of MOL..... :-|

Not sure what's more imbecilic - MOL's "rants" which seem to blithely disregard safety, or Donald Trump declaring the latest election as invalid and harping on about the birther theory. And at one point, they were comparing the CEO of QR (Al Bakar?) and MOL - crazy talk now.

On an interesting side note, is there anyone here who can talk about why trains and many buses don't require seat belts? (Apart from possibly enforcement....)

Having been on a flight from Sydney to Wagga that turned upside down when we circled a really nasty storm cell, I have to say, seat belts do work quite well. I believe there was a similar incident near Griffith as well. Standing in a flight, how dumb is that.

Seat belts are a legal requirement on busses in many jurisdictions. People listen to the bus driver telling them this just as muchas they listen to the safety briefing...

@Check in:

Would you like to upgrade to seat belt seat sir?
Only 2 pounds 50 by credit card.
How about a total customer care package. Priority boarding, wash room access and seat belt for 20 pounds?

..Haha

Can someone explain the difference between MOL and an Internet troll? Is is just that he peddles his inflammatory comments via a media agency?

An internet troll does this for fun MOL does this to get free worldwide advertising and pay per poo no longer shocks anyone. I think it's safe to assume MOL has no intentions of removing seatbelts from his planes or doing standing room only flights despite what he says, otherwise we'd be seeing some hard lobbying by Ryanair rather than a once every 6 months soundbite.

Having actually flown Ryanair a few sectors, I can tell you their landings have been some of the roughest. I don't know if it is because of the pilots or the rough runways Ryanair usually fly to but it is funny when a Ryanair plane lands, the passengers actually clap in relief that they are still alive!
