Having a look at seat selection on jetstar and looks like the people whom are willing to pay for the opportunity to select their seat, all seem to choose as close to the front of economy as possible.

So would this mean that if we choose to sit down the back of the plane we would have more chance of getting spare seats next to us??

Or will the spare seats be taken up by the tight bums who wont pay for seat selection (if so they are not looking over my shoulder to watch my inflight entertainment system.....)

You are taking a bit of a gamble with that logic.

You don't see those who have chosen not to pay the seat selection fee. So in reality you may have an extremely full flight, and no spare seats any where.

At this stage we have been told that the flight has plenty of seats but this could change as we are not flying until May next year.

We hope to pay to upgrade to star class.

The reason is that my hubby has broken his back and we are not sure if he could spend 12 hours in an economy seat. If there was chance he would have a spare seat next to him then he could move a little. Hoping he is well enough to fly in 6 months (its already been 6 months since surgery and he is still not well)

My experience is that the further back you sit in Jetstar Economy on int'l flights, the more free seats you have. It does get extremely cold though - they don't put the heating up so that you are forced to buy their blankets!!

Far too early to tell this far out (or worry about it). Every single seat could be sold by then.

Have you looked at paying for the upgrade online?

Leaving it that long, there is a chance any seats in their business class may be gone by then.

Where are you flying to and from in May next year? If its 12 hours I am assuming either Japan or Hawaii?

We are going to Hawaii.

How do you do the upgrade online? is it via change booking? Nothing is showing to upgrade to business?

At this stage it's way too far ahead to make the call however May is always a peak time to go to Hawaii so I would plan on there not being any spare seats & allocate the best seating you can for your family group in economy.

Last time I changed a booking was via the Change Booking online. Saying that it has been a while.
