Seat selection on Dash 8s

I checked in last night for a trip that includes a leg on a Dash 8. At T-80 I couldn't select any seats on that bit, but when I checked in (about 15 hours before takeoff) I was able to select a seat. It's been a while since I've flown on one, is that always the sequence of events? Should I bother trying to get a good seat on one at T-24?

Seat selection on a Dash 8 can only be done at T-24, i.e. when on line check in opens. Always worth checking after that until you get the seat you want. And then lose it when the plane type changes. (Applicable for exit row seats in the front row.)
