Seat Selection and Online Check In on QF without printer

Hi

We are travelling on Qantas QF128 from Hong Kong to SYD and would like to select seats for free when check in opens 24hours before flight. My prob is that I do not have access to a printer as I will be travelling in China at the 24 hours prior point. Is it poss to do online check in and select seats but not print the boarding pass and when I get to the airport ( or Hong Kong / Kowloon In Town Check In ) to drop off the luggage at the check in counter to then ask the staff there to print off the boarding passes......or would they refuse or charge me to print a duplicate boarding pass? Anyone with such experiences or suggestions? Thanks

Definitely no problem.
Qantas are many things, but they're not Ryanair.

In case you needed a third opinion... no problems at all. I do this all the time for domestic and international QF flights, both departing from Australia and overseas - use the online checkin to pick seats and go back in to see if I can improve on them. The airport has always printed out the boarding passes when you get there without any fees or hassles.
They may ask if you've already checked in online (maybe they look at a different screen if you've already done that).

Another one for check in in online before hand but picking up boarding passes at the airport.
Typically I'll check in online, then on arrival at the airport I'll head straight for the QP and pick up my boarding passes there. However for international flights I've never had a problem picking up boarding passes from the check in desk.

First few times I did this I think I confused a few check in agents whom didn't realize I'd already checked in, however these days I think it's pretty common to OLCI first and then pick up boarding passes at the airport.

Take note that flight could be a full flight and only middle seats available when OLCI opens and certainly no seats together. So if that doesn't bother you then you should be fine to wait until OLCI opens.

I had similar issue last year when my wife came over on QF24/QF23 and I tried to save $25/each way for seat allocation. She was allocated a window seat down the back and only 5-6 middle seats available. Luckily a friend a Qantas helped out. Next time I am going to pay the money up front for seat allocation.

If you really wanted to have some form of confirmation, you could potentially OLCI and then PDF print the BP?

You can definitely do OLCI and just save a pdf copy to your pc or tablet. Some airports have a dedicated OLCI queue which is generally shorter than the general lane and you could just ask the CSA for a reprint there.

I think your idea of checking your bags in at Kowloon or the Island is a good idea because you can do that a lot earlier than at the airport so have more chance of fixing up any potential seating issues earlier rather than leaving it to when you arrive at the airport when more people would have checked in and therefore less seats to choose from.
