I am flying Air NZ in J to SFO later this year. All their planes are now refurbished and feature the 1-2-1 herringbone lay out.

Any recommendations on pick seats or ones to avoid from experience?

Or experiences flying in this layout? Seems a lot less private than say the QF J where you could not really see other people in the cabin.

Thanks!!

I find 1B or 1J quite private. Some people comment about looking across the aisle to other passengers, but once I recline, I don't find this an issue at all, and certainly the partitions make it very private when sleeping, much more so than many other J class products.

You see the person over the aisle but that's it. I had 4A and loved it. Beware of 1B, people coming through the curtain bumped the foot stool repeatedly.

I love 4K. I had it by chance on my first J Air NZ flight and have stuck with it.
Only 4 rows from the front so its quite close, however you don't hear the galley noise or have things brushing past you, and far enough from the Lavs to not have people walking past you the whole time.

It depends what Qantas aircraft you're on, most of their international aircraft have the sky beds which are not very private at all and don't all have direct access.. Once you're a little reclined (You can be reclined partially for the whole flight) you're in your shell and its pretty private.

You raise a good point. Whilst I haven't had this I could potentially see this being an issue!

It's not uncommon for the foot stools to be bumped all through the cabin during trolley service however... Much less than row 1 though.

Thanks jackthomas - have a return J flight on the 777-300 with Air NZ over Christmas so have just locked in 4k & 4J for Mrs Blockers & I :)

Particularly as the curtain makes that particular stool harder to see. I made a conscious effort on each trip from the bathroom not to bump it.
But yes, my feet did get bumped once or twice. Not too big a deal though. Its the only plane seat where I've slept so well that I woke up to find the rest of the cabin already enjoying breakfast.
