Seat Counter availability for SYD - SFO

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

Good afternoon to you all. I've been reading this forum for several years now (so perhaps I should be able to answer this question myself!), however I would be grateful for some advice regarding an upcoming trip.

On August 29, my girlfriend (Melanie) and I are flying MEL - SYD and then SYD - SFO. We are on a L class RTW trip booked via AA (thanks for the money saving tip on that one!) and the first two flights are QF but obviously ticketed AA. Melanie is QF Gold, however I currently have no status with OneWorld - but I have just signed up for the Platinum challenge; again, thanks for the tips on that, too.

I have looked at Seat Counter to try and see availability, however it is not allowing me to post in here due to me having less than ten posts and potential SPAM issues.

May I please ask the following questions:

1 - do we stand any chance of a paid for on departed upgrade, or does the L class part rule that out?

2 - would Melanie stand any chance of a comp ODU if she was travelling on her own? I am more just curious at this point for your thoughts and opinions.

1) QF don't offer paid upgrades. You can put in a request for both your partner and yourself (using her points if she has enough) to upgrade the flights using points.
2) It's hard to say re: comp ODU. It does appear to be happening more frequently due to the GFC but there are so many factors to consider.

If you had been travelling L class on the QF flight numbers you would have had a reasonable chance of upgrading using Qantas Frequent Flyer points. (You need QF flight numbers on QF metal.)

As for 2, you chances are joint - although if there was only one available seat, it would go to a single traveller. So in this rare event the chances are slightly slimmer - IMHO, not enough to worry about.

Hi,

Thanks for the input above. We have been researching the baggage allowance that we will have and we would like to confirm with you guys that the following is correct:

We are allowed two pieces of checked baggage for the entire trip and the weights are effectively determined by the lowest allowance of the OneWorld member airline we are flying, being:

CX - 23kg
QF - 23kg
BA - 23kg
AA - 23KG

I understand that total dimensions of the 2 pieces must not exceed 270cm (106in) with no 1 piece exceeding 158cm (62in)?

So I therefore assume the maximum weight is 23kg per bag, and this is fine with us. I also assume the MEL-SYD connecting domestic leg does not have separate baggage rules applied.

As I mentioned previously, we are booked in L class via AA. The flights are MEL-SYD-SFO-MIA-GCM-MIA-BGI-JFK-LHR-NCL-LHR-HKG-MEL.

MEL-SFO is operated by QF but AA flight numbers. SFO-JFK is AA on AA flight numbers. JFK-LHR (inc internal flights) is BA on BA flight numbers. LHR-MEL is CX on CX flights numbers

Melanie is Gold QF but I don't think this matters as we are booked with AA and didn't book through QF?
